Fans of the Stax catalog will note that some of these songs have appeared elsewhere, including various volumes of the massive The Complete Stax/Volt Soul Singles series. This is a solid, unified holiday album offering some hot tracks that will raise the temperature of any holiday gathering. Standout tracks include Mack Rice's "Santa Claus Wants Some Lovin'" and Rufus Thomas' "I'll Be Your Santa Baby'," both of which are adult, sexy numbers. Thanks to Stax for pulling these classics together from across disparate albums. (The disc's only downside is its short running time of just over 40 minutes.) No Christmas collection is complete without this offering. ~ JT Griffith | | Save for the Atco Soul Christmas compilation, there isn't another post-'50s R&B Christmas album that can beat this collection of gems from the Stax vaults. Of the ten songs, Albert King gets two, both with leads on his Flying V, including his cover of "Santa Claus Wants Some Lovin'" (Mack Rice's original is also included). Rufus Thomas's "I'll Be Your Santa Baby" will get people away from that punchbowl and onto the dance floor, but there's plenty here for the mistletoe segment of your office party: Little Johnny Taylor's fine version of "Please Come Home for Christmas" and the beautiful falsetto lead in The Temprees' "The Christmas Song." The Staple Singers' "Who Took the Merry out of Christmas?" is one of their best grooves ever, despite what the title might imply. ~ Dennis MacDonald, Roundup newsletter |
