The Roomba Special Edition has it all and gets it all. Roomba Discovery SE is the top of the line Roomba with some very down to earth features. Like Roomba Discovery, the SE features Dirt Detect, the self-charging Home Base, an extra-large debris bin, the Roomba Remote, three cleaning modes. And, of course, the SE comes with the Advanced Power System that gives all Roombas the energy to get the job done. SE does it all, and looks great doing it. Specifications:

• Active Dirt Response: Roomba senses and finds dirt. Once dirtier areas are detected, Roomba automatically increases the intensity and focus of its cleaning.

• Cleaning Intelligence: Just push a button and Roomba automatically calculates how long it needs to work to clean your entire room.

• Advanced Power System: Roomba has a microprocessor controlled charging system that provides up to 120 minutes of cleaning power, It recharges its battery in 3 hours, 60% faster than the original Roomba. With the Advanced Power System, Roomba can clean up to 4 rooms before charging.

• Proprietary Cleaning System: Roomba’s high efficiency vacuum has a wide cleaning path, 2-times more powerful suction and counter-rotating agitators to reach into your carpet and remove the dirt. The entire cleaning head automatically adjusts for both carpet and hard floor surfaces.

• Roomba’s spinning sidebrush and Wall Following technology team up to grab dirt and debris from wall edges and other hard-to-reach places.

• Three powerful cleaning modes: Clean, Spot and Max

• Air filter prevents dust and dirt from entering Roomba’s vacuum system or your air

• Self-Charging Home Base--Roomba now has the built-in intelligence to automatically return to its self-charging home base when its battery is low or it has completed a cleaning cycle. This means your Roomba will always be charged and ready for its next cleaning mission.

• Stasis Sensor--Roomba immediately detects when it’s stuck and initiates its careful escape routine

• Max Mode--Run the Roomba for the full charge of the battery to vacuum multiple rooms

• Spot Mode--Intensely cleans one area of a room up to three feet in diameter

• 2 Virtual Walls--Keeps the Roomba where its wanted by blocking doorways with an invisible beam

• Multi-Surface Cleaning--Cleans hardwood, tile, linoleum, and low-to-medium pile carpet

• Automatic Surface Transitioning--The entire cleaning head adjusts automatically for both carpet and hard floor surfaces

• Automatic Stair Avoidance System--Leave Roomba by itself without worrying about it falling down stairs

• Standard infrared remote control lets you control standard Roomba functions from across the room

• Bagless debris bin now holds three times the dirt

4 of 5 so lazy Tuesday, August 26, 2008
damean from New York, New York

haven't used mine in six months. I think it still works. It really is fantastic at taking up debris that you didn't know was there. if you have a cat or a dog the product is cool. if you have any wires on the floor the product is not cool. you see I have a cat and the cat hair that you cannot see on the floor this product will pick up. But if you have any wires like power cords or speaker wire this product will try to pick that up also and will most likely getting jammed inside. The product is a bit of a novelty what it takes hours to do, you can do in 10 minutes with a standalone vacuum cleaner. The product looks cool and is always a topic of conversation. I think I prefer to have my hundred and $150 back.

2 of 5 Dance of Death Monday, June 02, 2008
dan from oakland, ca
This thing worked like a dream for about 3 months, then it happened: The Dance of Death. It just goes haywire, spins aimlessly, shuffles back and forth, then shuts down. Tried cleaning the optical sensors per the message boards, but within a day, it was acting up again. It's now collecting dust. Started out being the best thing on earth, then quickly became a useless doorstop.

3 of 5 A good helper Tuesday, May 20, 2008
Max from Royal Oak, MI
A great help to pick up, when I am at work because it is very noisy, (I bought the programmable remote control separately), my dog and cat's hair. It worked fine for the first 2 months then the vacuum stopped working. I am contacting the customer support to see if it will be easy or hard to get it up and running. It is very easy to operate, and it takes about 10 minutes of your time to clean it every time it is done with the run.

4 of 5 Roomba...amazing to say the least! Friday, February 15, 2008
antner from Davie,FL
Pros...cleans under the bed and picks up stuff you never get with a regular vacuum. I would say it is 99% effective as far as overall area coverage. Easy to maintain. Cleans a lot better than I expected on all surfaces(we have carpet and laminate). My wife can even work it without getting frustrated! Cons...wish battery would last longer. Have to recharge after every room so it's hard to get everything vacuumed in one day. Hopefully, I won't need to spend a lot to replace parts over time. Not sure if there is a way to charge a back up battery while the Roomba is vacuuming? Overall, I think this is a pretty amazing device and well worth the bargain price of $150 that I paid!

5 of 5 We Love IT!! Monday, January 14, 2008
A Customer from apple valley, ca
This Roomba is great. And the price was great too. However, the 8 weeks I had to wait for it was not so great. I did find that the unit could only clean about 1000 sq. ft. of my house before it had to be recharged, so I have to do three sessions of cleaning for the whole house.

5 of 5 Vacuuming can be fun Saturday, January 12, 2008
A Customer from Spokane, Washington
Great little vacuum! My husband calls it our new pet. Gets into spaces I wouldn't expect and great near the baseboards. Placement of the homebase is important so it can find its way back when done or it will just keep cleaning until the battery goes dead. Also homebase is not suppose to be on carpet, we solved this by getting a piece of plexiglass.

5 of 5 Not a toy Saturday, January 12, 2008
KC from Vacaville, CA
I thought this item would be little more than an amusing conversation piece. However, after a couple weeks of using it, we have found it to work very well. It is amazing how it get around and under furniture. It has excellent suction, so much so that we have to empty the tray about every 20 minutes. I am totally surprised and extremely happy with it. Thinking about buying another for upstairs. We bought for $144, great value for the money

5 of 5 I love the bot! -dog hates it - it hates stairs Wednesday, January 09, 2008
micbeth from Red Cloud, NE
This is the best thing since since store bought bread! This bot keeps up with the dog hair, but the dog isn't sure it likes the bot going towards his toys. This keeps up with the dirt in between deep cleaning vacuuming, keeps dog hair under control, does dock and recharge itself, (and does like to get stuck under beds and run out of juice OCCASIONALLY), but it's easy to just push a button and let it go. I think it does a much better job than I do, and when I call home to see what my husband is doing, he now tells me that he's vacuuming. I do have to use one of the electronic bars by the stairs as it WILL fall down the stairs, then emits a distinctive "help me" beeping sound as it lay at the bottom upside down.

4 of 5 Kiss dust and dirt goodbye Tuesday, January 08, 2008
A Customer from Monterey Park, CA
Not only is this a good vacuum cleaner, it is a great little toy. I gave it to my mom who cleans at least once-a-day and she loves the Roomba, especially controlling it with the remote. The only drawback is that the living room is very big and filled with furniture that the Roomba can get lost under, so it sometimes runs out of charge if it gets stuck under the sofa or the chair for a prolonged period. Other than that, great product, keeps the house clean, and keeps me from having to do more chores whenever I come to visit.

Robert Carbonell from North Richland Hills, Texas
Makes our life easy, I would recommend this to anyone that has wood or tile floors and yes carpet. I was going crazy with my dogs hair that every day or 2 days I had to sweep, with the irobot now I can concentrate on other things around the house.

4 of 5 Gets the places you can't reach Friday, January 04, 2008
A Customer from Austin, Texas
The Roomba is good for getting under furniture and hard to reach places. It does a good job on the floor, but there will be the missed place here and there. Corners have to be swept out manually. It's not the complete cleaning solution, but it is a good partner in keeping the floor clean. Haven't had any issues with this model yet. Our floor space is bigger, and he runs out of juice by the end of the cleaning cycle. And sometimes he needs 5 tries before finding home.

4 of 5 great, but watch out for cords, long wait for supp Monday, December 31, 2007
Mike from La Crosse, WI
I got my roomba and plugged it in for the full charge right away. I let it go and then had to sit and babysit it for the first 2 hours while i ran around and made sure every cord was tied up and nothing was on the floor. if you have rugs, forget it. you can use the remote to vac the rugs and then have it drive off so you can just pick the rugs up. it sweeps up tile pretty well too. I emptied that bucket many times. After about 3 weeks of use, the beater stopped turning. I took it apart and found it to have a stripped plastic gear. Either because a few things wrapped around the beater bog it down that much, or they use the cheapest plastic gears they can. Well anyways I have a new one on order, in-warranty exchange I should say. It has been almost a month and no new roomba yet. I guess I'll wait till that comes before I do anything more.

A Customer from Costa Mesa, CA
I got the roomba for my wife as an early Christmas present and she loves it. We have already talked several of our friends into getting one. You'll be surprised how well it manuvers around your house. It's also a lot of fun. It's like a little pet that cleans!

5 of 5 Just one problem Sunday, December 16, 2007
A Customer from Douglasville, Ga.
Well overall I like the Roomba, it seems to work fairly well, and does not get stuck even with obstacles. Although it does seem to use a good bit of power if the obstacle is a major one. It does avoid falling off of stairs and also finds its way to every room left open or not blocked by the electronic walls. My major drawback is that is that it dies in other rooms and does not shut down with enough power to remote guide it back to its base, or better yet remember where the base is without it seeing the signal.

4 of 5 Roomba actually does work! Wednesday, December 12, 2007
Janet W. from Adelphi, MD
I held off on trying the Roomba robotic vac for years while the maker improved the line. The Scheduler model I bought from buy.com is doing well for me. I started it off with the acid test: picking up human hair in quantity following hubby's and my home haircuts. In our large but oddly shaped bathroom, Roomba captured about 95% of the hairs in a 1-hour cleaning riff. (It stopped with a full wastebin at the 45-minute point.) The only thing it couldn't seem to do was go *in both directions* parallel to the edge of our bathtub. This mattered because there's only one "edge brush" and it was on the wrong side of the Roomba to whisk hairs into the machine from the inch or so along the tub bottom.

5 of 5 WOW! Roomba Tuesday, December 11, 2007
candi_h from Coos Bay, Or.
This is the greatest invention since the washing machine. It is fast, efficient and does a terrific job. I hate to vacuum and this is THE answer. I have had mine for some time and have had no problems with it. I would recommend it to anyone. I still have to get the room ready to vacuum--but I had to do that anyway. It is Great.

4 of 5 Excellent product so far Tuesday, December 11, 2007
A Customer from Red Bank, New Jersey
I've just recd our Roomba about a week ago, been using it almost daily and so far it works great. It actually is very good in picking up the cat hair off the dark rugs. Better than my vacumn. We have been cleaning it after each use although it's not necessary. I gave a score of 4 for overall satisfaction simply because of the noise factor, although not really a problem, but perfection would be absolute silence. Other than that, a great product.

Rick M from Lakeside, CA
I am very pleased with the Roomba it does a very good job. You do need to clean and empty it's bin often, but it is very easy to do. You also need to let it charge for atleast 3 days before using it or it will not function properly. I'm contemplating getting a Scooba.

4 of 5 All of the below and more Tuesday, December 11, 2007
GM from San Ramon
I read all of the reviews below. They are all true. Here's a summary:
Pros:
1. Yes, it is great and cleans up the room as advertised.
2. It is great for someone who doesn't want to do the cleaning everyday with a vacuum cleaner. Just turn it ON and sit back and relax.
3. There's a new one available that cleans up 4 rooms in one shot. But it is about $260 at costco.
4. Automatically returns back to the charging base when done!
5. It has dirt detector and allows it to go around the spot more than once to remove dirt.

BUT:
1. It is noisy, but less than a regular vacuum cleaner.
2. It does take about 45-60 minutes / room.
3. Doesn't come with a scheduler built in. You need to buy the scheduling remote and scheduling virtual walls.
4. Does leave some dirt around table legs.
5. You do need to move chairs and such furniture to ensure better cleaning. I do that for a regular vacuum cleaner as well, so no difference here.
6. AND clean the filter every few runs. If you have more dirt, do it everytime. Now, I would just clean it before I start it so no worries!

All in all, great for my kitchen & high traffic area that needs frequent cleaning. Nice to just turn it on and leave!

5 of 5 Much better than expected Tuesday, December 11, 2007
T Green from Ann Arbor, MI
When my wife opened the "Roomba" she said "Glad you didn't get me this for Christmas!" and doubted that it really worked. However now she is very happy with it and it does 80% of the vacuuming, and much more frequently than we ever did it. We use it in two rooms a day and get the house done every week. It only lasts about 40 minutes on carpeting, but will get a 400sqft room done in that time. As it recharges in just 3 hours, it can then clean another room. Since it is important to keep power cords and loose things off the ground, we tend to keep things picked up neater too.

5 of 5 Great Product and Great Value! Tuesday, December 11, 2007
Pat Miller from Carrollton, TX
First, I have to say how impressed I was with the ease of setting up to run the first time. I expected it to be complicated, but after charging, and moving a couple of cords on the floor, I put my Roomba to work. I have two c*cker Spaniels and keeping ahead of their fur and what they drag in from the yard has been a challenge. So the room I started with is the one with the dog door. I couldn't believe how good a job it did! My initial thought was, to be fair, I should vacumn the first time and then let Roomba keep up. Instead, I just turned it loose to see how much it could handle. I didn't need to do anything else! Tonight I'll be turning it lose on the living room. What a gift for myself!

This is my second roomba & I love it it does a great job, much easier to service (clean the brushes) than my orrigional roomba Pro Elite, and the schudler feature is great I just set it & forget it, only problem I have is that it occasionaly doesnt find the charger base while roving and cleaning the 3 rooms it has access to. Its been great for heeping up with the fur from my cats and any other tracked in dirt.

I can't believe I did without a iRobot Roomba for all this time. What a time/life saver it has been for me. AND I thought my Kirby was do'n a good job 'til I ran the Roomba around the room for 45 minutes (emptying it 3 times in the process). The Kirby was just going thru the motions...the Roomba does the job. I'm looking at buying one of iRobot's Scooba to clean my kitchen and hardwood floors. Now if I can just train them to cook...this bachelor has it made.m o~\o

5 of 5 The Good, The Bad and The Too Cute. Saturday, December 08, 2007
Dave from Las Vegas, NV
THE GOOD: We have the house vacuumed once a week by a team of highly paid professionals. But we never realized how much dirt and dog hair accumulates between cleanings until we bought our Roomba and started running it every day. Now the house looks clean and, more importantly, my allergies are almost nil. We love it so much, we bought another -- one for upstairs and one for down. The dogs pretty much ignore the Roombas - -except when one bumps into them during a nap. Then the offended dog just looks annoyed and usually moves. The best thing is they clean under the beds and get all those dust bunnies the maids miss. THE BAD: Roomba gets stuck fairly frequently. It hangs up on throw-rugs, bath mats, cell phone charger cords and venetian blind cords. Occasionally it will also get stuck under furniture with low headroom. Roomba finds its charging station about 20% of the time. We have a fairly complex floor plan, so I think they get lost. They frequently run out of juice under a bed and we go on a Roomba search. Since they don't respond to their names, we have to look in all the dark places. Sometimes Roomba will absolutely refuse to pick up a clump of dog hair. It just rolls over it no matter how many times it tries. We don't know if it tastes bad or what, but it is really no big deal. THE TOO CUTE: The bottom line is we love pressing the "Clean" button and leaving for work. Emptying the dust bin takes about 15 seconds when we get home and it is ready for the next cleaning. We also have an iRobot Looj on order for the rain gutters, but that will have to wait for a review...

5 of 5 for the price a great way to try the Roomba Saturday, December 08, 2007
A Customer from Portland, Oregon
I have been wanting a Roomba for about a year. When I got the Black Monday email regarding the $139.99 model I couldn't resist. I figured if it didn't work as I hoped I wouldn't be out $299. Well, it's amazing. I got it for my hardwood floors and berber carpet areas of my home. It cleans on its own while I do other things. People who complain about the noise? It's WAY quieter than a traditional vac. And, yes, you do have to take a minute or two to set it up, recharge it, etc but you CAN do other things while it's working...don't stand there and watch it!! I clean different areas on different days so it's no big deal that it's not all done at once. Then it makes sense timewise, to have it clean while you so something else. Also, my dog attacks my traditional vac and ignores the Roomba so that's music to my ears and takes her and my stress level down. Plus the kids love our new "Robot." I don't recommend it for high-pile carpet, we don't have "shag" in parts of our house but it is quite dense and I don't like the way it leaves tracks so I use a regular vacuum in those parts of the house. But for hardwood and berber this baby rocks!

5 of 5 Excellent Timesaver Saturday, December 08, 2007
A Customer from New Albany, IN
I have been looking at these for several years as a possible timesaver for my wife and me, for keeping our home vacuumed. This usually takes about 45 minutes to an hour, just for the floors. The Roomba, which I couldn't help thinking was a light-duty toy, does an excellent, thorough job. It cleans around the feet of furniture like dressers, if it can get underneath them, which is a time-consuming task for regular vacuuming. We have a lot of hardwood and ceramic tile to clean, and the Roomba frees up the time to do other things. Just get the cords, air lines (Select Comfort beds) and small, light objects up and let this go. It's no toy and does do a good job.

A Customer from Fessenden ND
We are absolutely thrilled with this product! It is so easy to use, and does a beautiful job on our carpets and flooring. We have a long-haired cat, and a long-haired dog, and the Roomba gets it all! We would wholeheartedly recommend this product to anyone who would like to cut the time they devote to housework down considerably.

5 of 5 Impressive Saturday, December 08, 2007
A Customer from Chapel Hill, NC
I am really impressed with the Roomba Discovery. With the exception of rugs with tassle fringes (which the instructions warn you about) it works great on both hardwood, thick carpets, and area rugs. Really cool software that allows the device to figure out ways in and out, even under a dining room table with all the chairs in place.

mb from rio grande ohio
I have wooden floors and very thick carpet. on Wooden floors this thing flies around cleaning up stuff I didn't know was even there. on the carpet it does bog down a bit but even though it moves a bit slower on the carpet and runs out of gas quickly on the carpet it still does a nice job there as well. I would consider buying a 2nd one

4 of 5 Impressive product Saturday, December 08, 2007
A Customer from Birmingham, AL
We were skeptical about how well the iRobot would work, but we've been very impressed. I do wish it had a softer surface for bumping into some of our better wood furniture, but it does do a very good job vacuuming the floors. Battery life is a little short, so we have to split up some of the bigger rooms with the virtual walls and clean each half between charges, but the iRobot will stay busy at our house. It was definitely a good investment.

4 of 5 If you hate to vaccuum floors Saturday, December 08, 2007
Judy from Boston, MA
Don't throw away your vaccuum cleaner yet. Roomba model 4200 is a surprisingly good but not perfect robot. It vaccuums floors well; however, the tasks of reaching small (less than the diameter of Roomba) spaces and doing stairs is still your job. My favorite features are that it doesn't fall off the top stair, that it reseats itself for recharging after finishing, that it switches seamlessly from medium pile carpet to tile height, and that it's fun to watch. The box comes with 2 virtual barriers, which did not work for me. They each use 2 size D batteries that need replacing frequently, and my Roomba pretty much ignored them. Instead, I've started just putting Roomba in a room and closing the door. Roomba doesn't like fringe or wires, so you'll have to deal with that. Cleaning the Roomba is easy and intuitive. The users manual is just pitiful; however, there is a mildly fanatic user group on the net.

5 of 5 Excellent Product Saturday, December 08, 2007
Jim Palladino from Liverpool, NY
The Irobot is amazing. It is fascinating to watch it cover every square inch of floor space in several rooms. It does a thorough job on all surfaces and has a very satisfactory battery life.

5 of 5 Works Well. Fun to watch. Thursday, December 06, 2007
A Customer from Worcester, MA.
This is my 3rd Roomba. It won't replace a normal vacuum but it works very well for in-between (daily) vacuuming, especially if you own an animal. Its fun to watch and I love that it goes underneath furniture and around kitchen chair legs. It also serves to entertain my cat who likes to follow it around. It does have to be cleaned out often.

4 of 5 Roomba is a Sweeper Tuesday, December 04, 2007
G. DeKoning from Morehead City, NC
My Roomba is a nice, although somewhat expensive, novelty but certainly not a cleaning panacea. It does a good job of lifting carpet nap, sweeping up surface dirt, but cannot deep clean since it is not a vacum cleaner. It frequently dumps it's load (even very small ones) while going from flat surfaces to carpet, so I keep the dustbuster handy. And it seems to be getting louder with each use. I wonder if the floor washing model wouldn't have been a better buy??? It is a good conversation piece, and one good thing in it's favor....it gets under the beds!

4 of 5 Keeps up with the cat hair... Tuesday, December 04, 2007
A Customer from Christiansburg, VA
I just bought a new house that has no carpeting on the first floor, and the loose hair from my 2 cats would cling together in clumps and roll around like tumbleweeds if I didn't sweep or vacuum almost every day. I have back problems, so I gave the Roomba a try. It works very well on the cat hair and it saves a lot of strain on my back. The cats were afraid of it at first, but now they just find a high place to stay while it's running. It's also great for hard-to-reach places, such as under beds.

4 of 5 Victory over Dust Bunnies Tuesday, December 04, 2007
JB from Kingsport, TN
My son had owned a Roomba for several years, but paid too much for it, I thought. When I saw the current lowered price I jumped on it, and am well-satisfied with the machine. It keeps the floor clean between major house-cleaning projects. We were searching for a name for it when the news broke about the Brit teacher in Sudan. In tribute to her, our Roomba is now known as "Mohammed".

5 of 5 Wonderful! Monday, December 03, 2007
A Customer from Mountain View, CA
Best thing since sliced bread! Well, almost. It definitely cleans a room, but takes quite some time to do so (30-45 min). I tidy up a room of things it might get stuck on, turn it ON, and go do something else. Amazingly "smart" about getting out of corners. Gets spots that I never got to, e.g. under the bed, closet corners, etc. The virtual walls seem to have a rather wide beam so Roomba does not go as close to them as I expected. Is somewhat noisy on hard floors but reasonable on carpet (just like a traditional vacuum cleaner). Can handle floor to carpet transitions except when trying to get onto a carpet via the corner of the carpet. We put a couple of "googly" eyes on it and it is very cute :-)

5 of 5 iroomba makes my life easier! Monday, December 03, 2007
MAR from Brewster, MA
This is an excellent product! I love setting it to do its' job as I leave for work in the morning and come home to a vacuumed house! This works very well, will go from a low pile rug to hardwood floors to a tile floor and picks up all the dirt. Well worth the money.

5 of 5 P.S. Other reviews about the noise Monday, December 03, 2007
A Customer from Houston TX
I meant to address others' comments about the noise. ANY machine makes noise and regular vacuum cleaners make much more noise than the Roombas. I truly do turn my Roombas on when I go to bed at night; some people ask me if the noise doesnt disturb me. My answer is "yes, I just HATE to hear someone else vacuuming MY house." :) My dog is very noise-sensitive and skittish but she lets the Roombas come right up to her feet. If the Roombas were twice as noisy, I'd still love them!!

5 of 5 Awesome product! Awesome seller! Monday, December 03, 2007
A Customer from Houston TX
I'm hooked on these Roombas! I have three (for the house), a dirt dog (for the garage) and two Scoobas (floor-washers). I'm trying to go on the "Roomba wagon", but it's not easy when they're so much fun and so easy to use. I can go to bed and wake up to clean floors; I can go to work and come home to clean floors; or I can just sit there and watch them clean my floors (the best fun of all). My dog, who hates the vacuum cleaner (which I will NEVER have to use again, thank you Roomba) doesnt mind the Roombas at all. The Discovery works as well as the 580, which is the top-of-the-line model; in fact, all the Roombas work equally well on hard floors. Even the dirt dog could be used inside. And you cant beat the prices on the older models or the dirt dog; you dont get as many bells-n-whistles on the cheaper models, but you also dont really need a docking station or extra lighthouses or the remote. I've bought them from different sites (irobot.com, eBay and buy.com) and, BY FAR, the best deal, the best price and the best customer service was from Buy.com! I wish I could buy everything from buy.com!!!!

5 of 5 Robbie Robot is my best friend! Monday, December 03, 2007
A Customer from Crystal River FL
All my friends are amazed at what a good job "Robbie" does in my house. He's a real conversation piece. I have mostly ceramic tile floors and a dog and a cat. The floors collect a lot of dust & hair and so do the throw rugs. Robbie is my own personal cleaning person. I have a large house so "Robbie" is a very busy robot. He does just as good on carpet as he does on the tile. When I empty out the dirt, I am amazed at what he has collected. This item is an exceptional value, in my opinion.

5 of 5 Wife and in-laws seem happy with it Monday, December 03, 2007
ErikTheMagnus from DFW, TX
I bought one of these for my wife (who lives two hours from me; we attend different universities) and one for my inlaws. I personally have not witnessed how well the thing cleans, but both my wife and my inlaws seem to love it. Also, when I visit my wife every weekend, her apartment has been cleaner than it has been in the past (which is a bit of a bonus for me as well).
