1 of 5 BEWARE! Thursday, January 08, 2009 Jeremy from Van Nuys, CA
Ok, so... I have firsthand experience with two of these things now. The first one I bought for home use, used it in Raid 0 mode for speed. Less than one year after purchase... it starts failing to mount... I manage to get it to run long enough to retrieve the important stuff before it just gives up. The drives... are fine... but the case/bridge is trashed. Pulled out the drives, tossed the case and moved on.
After being happy with this drive as an initial purchase and being impressed with it's speed and interface flexibility, I suggested we get on at the office as well to store the raw images from our product photography, offline from our main server to reduce backup load.
Well, it seems the case/bridge demons strike again... as it is beginning to unmount for now reason.. and as I type this I'm struggling to get it back on line. (luckily this one was set up Mirrored for redundancy and will be easy to just match up to another bridge and move forward)
The second drive is roughly 6 months old.
I can't say that I'm impressed with the durability of this product.
At least the drives are still good. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 No complaints after a couple of months Wednesday, July 30, 2008 Steven from Tampa, FL
I bought this a couple months ago to use with my Intel MacBook Pro and have had no problems of any kind. The drives run cool, the fan is quiet, the Firewire 800 is blazing fast, and it spins up very quickly. I set it up for RAID 1 for redundancy and best data protection (which obviously cuts your storage space in half to 500 GB, as some buyers don't realize). The company does not provide very good instructions as to how to change from the default RAID 0 setting to RAID 1, but there is a great review by J. Thompson on the Amazon page for this product that provides excellent, easy instructions. I am so pleased with this drive I will probably buy another soon. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 excellent Thursday, July 17, 2008 Reel Dog from Falls Church VA
The UltraMax boots/mounts quickly for its capacity (1TB); reliable, fast, fairly quiet during operation (once booted) and reasonably priced. I have several and they stack neatly in a small footprint. The speed of FireWire 800 is ideal for video work. The connection ports are easily accessed for daisy-chaining and/or attaching other peripherals as need. I have heard complaints about the on/off button, which perplexes me, since larger external drives have an independent on/off that behaves exactly the same as a computers (in this case MacPro). It works great with my Mac's Time Machine and you can't beat the speed of Firewire 800. You have to hold the power button to turn it on and off which bothered me at first, but it works great. Was this review helpful?

5 of 5 Outstanding product. Sunday, May 27, 2007 morris53 from Palmdale, CA
I had to wait nearly two months for my 1 Tb Iomega hard drive to get back into stock. I got a great deal from Buy.com. Much less than buying directly from Iomega and it wasn't available to order from Frys or any other computer product vendor. This product performs much better than Iomega warrants it to. I've moved it numberous times and taken it on several road trips and it's always ready to boot up and give me my data. I also have other Iomega hard drives; 160 Gb; 400 Gb; two 650 Gb. The latter two haven't been installed yet, but I transferred all my data from the former Iomega drives plus all my important files from both of my Dell laptops to this fantastic machine and have had zereo problems accessing information. I'm using a 400 Mb Fire Wire connection and it's flawless. Just yesterday I copied my entire music collection (21 Gb) to a 30 Gb Ipod I bought for my daughter and a 80 Gb Ipod that I bought for myself. I used Itunes and the extraction and recording process was absolutely amazing. I got a few blue screens but it wasn't due to the Ipods or the Iomega 1 Tb drive.
I've spent several thousands of dollars on Buy.com these past six years and will continue to do so because they offer the best deals on the internet. Was this review helpful?
