All her life Englishwoman Gladys Aylward knew that China was the place where she belonged. Not qualified to be sent there as a missionary, Gladys works as a domestic to earn the money to send herself to a poor, remote village. There she eventually lives a full and happy life: running the inn, acting as "foot inspector", advising the local Mandarin and even winning the heart of mixed race Captain Lin Nan. Well done drama based on the life of missionary Gladys Aylward who led a group of children through perilous 1930's China. Robert Donat gives a particularly fine performance as a Mandarin in this, his final film. Based on "The Small Woman" by Alan Burgess. Academy Award Nominations: Best Director.
Plot Summary
Based on the true story of Gladys Aylward, a British maid who became a missionary in China. As the hostile Chinese begin to trust her -- and even a powerful mandarin converts to Christianity -- there is one more difficult task for her to accomplish: to guide 100 children through enemy territory and into safety during the Chinese-Japanese war.
