A trip to moated Chiang Mai is a highlight of any visit to Thailand. By no means typical of Thai towns, Chiang Mai combines quaintness with modernity and has the best of everything the country has to offer, except for white sandy beaches. In terms of tourist infrastructure the place is hard to beat. It has an exemplary choice of places to stay and eat, undoubtedly the best shopping opportunities outside of the capital, and its compact size makes it a pleasure to get around. On top of this, Chiang Mai has pleasingly cooler evenings than many other parts of Thailand and is the nicest place to enrol in a course on Thai cooking, Buddhism, or a host of other learning programmes.
