SUPERSTAR. PHENOMENON. One of the most infamously famous, infinitely intriguing female entertainers of our time. Britney proves yet again her musical power to persuade, with her fourth album release, In The Zone.

Britney’s three previous album releases total over 26X platinum in U.S. sales with over 50 million worldwide album sales and counting. Named as one of People magazine’s "200 Most Beautiful People" of the year 2003, Britney sets the record straight that she is not just a pretty face. For In The Zone, Britney collaborates with the likes of The Matrix (Avril Lavigne), P. Diddy, R. Kelly, Moby, Guy Sigsworth (Madonna), Metro (Enrique Iglesias), Bloodshy & Avant (Ms. Dynamite) and Red Zone (B2K, Blu Cantrell, Mya) among others. In The Zone is the first Britney release for which she has done the majority of the writing.

If 2001's Britney was a transitional album, capturing Spears at the point when she wasn't a girl and not yet a woman, its 2003 follow-up, In the Zone, is where she has finally completed that journey and turned into Britney, the Adult Woman. Like her peer Christina Aguilera, Britney equates maturity with transparent sexuality and the pounding sounds of nightclubs, but since she's not as dirty as Xtina, her spin is a little different. Where Christina comes across like a natural-born skank, Britney is the girl next door cutting loose at college, drinking and smoking and dancing and sexing just a little too recklessly, since this is the first time she can indulge herself. And that's what In the Zone is -- Britney indulging herself, desperate to prove that she's an adult. She has been freed from her musical parent, Max Martin, who is absent for the first time from a Spears album, choosing instead to play the field and work with a bunch of different collaborators, including Madonna, Moby, the Matrix, Trixster, Roy "Royalty" Hamilton, Bloodshy & Avant, and R. Kelly. Since she's so determined to be a woman, not a girl, she has completely shed the sugarcoated big hooks and sappy love songs that drove her stardom, concentrating on music that glides by on mellow grooves or hits hard with its hip-hop beats. It's all club-ready, but despite some hints of neo-electro and the Neptunes, it doesn't quite sound modern -- it sounds like cuts from 1993 or Madonna's Bedtime Stories and Ray of Light. Production-wise, these tracks are not only accomplished but much more varied than any of her previous albums -- in particular, Moby's "Early Mornin'" has a sleek feel, Mark Taylor's "Breathe on Me" is alluring, and the Bloodshy & Avant productions, "Showdown" and "Toxic," are irresistible ear candy in what is surely Britney's most ambitious, adventurous album to date. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
On her 4th album, the omnipresent Britney Spears--with the aid of numerous collaborators and producers--has crafted a virtual soundtrack to her wild, club-hopping nights. Following up the media frenzy of her televised Madonna kiss, Britney kicks things off by unveiling a full-on collaboration with the Material Girl, "Me Against the Music." This party-fueled, dance-floor-ready anthem bookends IN THE ZONE with a bonus Bollywood-tinged remix, and both versions are emblematic of the album as a whole--energetic, assertive, and sexy.
On the saucy "(I Got That) Boom Boom," Britney makes a stop in the Dirty South to visit "crunk" rappers the Ying Yang Twins. The innuendo-laden hip-hop and R&B carries over to the sultry "Showdown," the Moby-produced "Early Mornin'," and "Outrageous," featuring production and backing vocals by R. Kelly. Of course, Britney finds time for a little quiet introspection on the string-soaked "Shadow" and the piano ballad, "Everytime." Although IN THE ZONE showcases Britney as a carefree party girl, these latter songs highlight the softer side of the pop superstar.

Bio
Britney

Britney Spears may have titled her new single "Me Against The Music," but she has rarely been more creatively in tune than she is right now. "I feel like I've hit a great new stride as an artist," she says with pride. "I've worked hard, and I feel like I've grown on so many levels."

In truth, "Me Against The Music" is hardly about declaring war against grooves. "Actually, it's about the intensity that people approach music with," Britney shares. "It's about getting totally lost in the music and pushing yourself to the edge in every way you can imagine. I love thoroughly immersing myself in music, and I wanted to capture that intensity in a song."

Britney's musical intensity and her evolution from a teen renegade into a provocative young woman are undeniable throughout "In The Zone," her fourth Jive Records collection. First and foremost, the project shows her flexing notably strong and mature songwriting muscles. She co-wrote 7 of the project's 12 sterling new compositions, collaborating with such heavy hitters as Red Zone ("Me Against The Music," "The Hook Up"), The Matrix ("Shadow"), Moby ("Early Mornin'"), and Cathy Dennis ("Toxic," "Showdown"). Also contributing hit worthy material to the album is R. Kelly ("Outrageous"), Ying-Yang Twins on “(I Got That) Boom Boom.”

Perhaps most significant is the appearance of pop icon Madonna, who lends her voice to the single "Me Against The Music." Collaborating with one of her all-time greatest musical influences was a dream come true for Britney. "The experience was beyond words or description." she says. The two forged what has become a powerful bond while rehearsing for their now-notorious performance on the MTV Video Music Awards this fall. "As we were working together, there were moments when I simply could not believe that I was standing there on stage next to her. It was never even in the realm of fantasy for me."

The musical union of Britney and Madonna within the taut, classic-funk groove of "Me Against The Music" is quite real, though, and it reveals each of them at their most kinetic and soulful. The song's accompanying video clip, directed by Paul Hunter, shows Madonna enticing Britney through a maze-like underground club, only to disappear into thin air when Britney gets close enough to touch her. The clip is rife with symbolic gestures of Madonna passing the baton pop power to Britney --- an image that the young artist finds exciting, humbling, and perhaps a bit premature.

"There is only one Madonna --- and there will always only be one," she says. "My goal is to have a career that is equally as special, but one that is completely unique to who I am. I'm honored by all that Madonna brought to this song. I really love the flow we share --- both on the track and as friends. I think you can feel the chemistry and positive energy we shared. It's completely natural and relaxed."

The natural and relaxed vibe of "Me Against The Music" is indicative of every note and beat comprises "In The Zone," an album that runs the stylistic gamut from streetwise hip-hop and electro-trance to new-wave-etched rock and well-crafted pop. From top to bottom, Britney effectively expands the parameters of mainstream musical consciousness with songs that lure listeners with infectious hooks, and then captivates them with layers of clever lyrics and deft instrumentation.

"Putting this record together was an incredible journey for me," Britney says. "I had the freedom to explore and experiment with some of the most exciting people in music. In the end, that allowed me to make a record that is a pure reflection of where I am right now."

What we learn from album highlights like the rambunctious "(I Got That) Boom Boom," which features the Ying Yang Twins, and "Everytime," a stark, delicate collaboration with Guy Sigsworth, is that Britney has grown into a fearless artist. "Those songs are particularly special to me, because neither of them sounds like anything I've ever done before," she says. "'Boom Boom' is so rough and edgy and fun, while 'Everytime' is so raw and spare. It's me stripped to my core as a singer and as a songwriter. It's as honest as I've ever been in my music. I loved working with Guy on that track. He made me feel comfortable and safe enough to go the full distance, emotionally and as a performer." Britney also has high praise for Moby, who worked with her on the mid-tempo "Early Mornin.'" "He's such a pure-hearted guy," she says. "He's so cool. He played me a really cool track, and I thought it was brilliant. It's turned out to be one of my favorite songs on the album."

She describes "Early Mornin,'" which unfolds with a deceptively insistent, easy-paced dance groove as a day-after-the-party jam, which balances some of the more assertive, dance floor-friendly cuts on "In The Zone." "Some songs are generally about going out and wanting to have a good time," she says. "One of the things I did while working on this album was write about a lot things like going out with my girlfriends, everyday experiences that I was going through. 'Early Morning' is about just going out and feeling bad the next day." Elsewhere on "In The Zone," Britney shows her sultry side, particularly on the steamy, turntable-ready "Breathe On Me," a Mark Taylor production that she characterizes as being "very vibe-y, trance-y. It's about being with a guy and not even having to really be with each other, but just the intensity and the anxiety between not saying anything. You don't even have to touch me, just breathe on me."

Among the more sensual songs on the album is "Touch of My Hand," on which Britney seductively floats her voice atop an arrangement of pillowy strings and languid, Middle-Eastern-kissed guitar lines. "It's tastefully done," she says of the track. "And I think it's real. It's nice and it's real. It's whatever your take is. Some people may think it's a little much, but that's where I'm at with my life. ... It's not freaky freaky, it's just a little freaky." Stepping out on a creative limb has been the basis for Britney's entire career. Dubbed by MTV as "one of the last teenage pop superstars of the 20th century," Spears enjoyed her breakthrough success at the end of 1998. She appeared in local dance revues and church choirs as a young girl, and at the age of eight auditioned for The Mickey Mouse Club. Although she was too young to join the series, a producer on the show gave her an introduction to a New York agent. She subsequently spent three summers at the Professional Performing Arts School Center. She also appeared in a number of off-Broadway productions as a child actor, including 1991's "Ruthless." She returned to the Disney Channel for a spot on The Mickey Mouse Club, where she was featured for two years between the ages of 11 and 13. Her demo tape eventually landed in the hands of a Jive Records executive who quickly signed her to the label. She toured American venues for a series of concerts sponsored by U.S. teen magazines, eventually joining "N Sync on tour. It all added up to 1999's wildly infectious "...Baby One More Time" album to make its bow on the charts at No. 1. The set not only spawned a smash hit with the title tune, but also scored with the charming ballad "Sometimes" and the funky "(You Drive Me) Crazy." Before the album finished its impressive worldwide attack of the charts, it garnered Britney 4 MTV Europe Awards, including best pop performer, and 4 Billboard Music Awards, most notably female artist of the year.

The massive demand for new Britney material was satisfied when her 2000 sophomore collection, "Oops! ... I Did It Again," was released to a Spears-starved world in May. Once again, the title cut flooded radio airwaves, as did the anthemic "Stronger" and lovely "Don't Let Me Be The Last To Know." She also racked up more awards that year by taking home an American Music Award as favorite new artist, a Billboard Music Award as album artist of the year, and 2 Teen Choice Awards. Britney would later earn Teen Choice Award honors in 2001 and 2003. Ever-prolific, the artist returned in 2001 with "Britney," a spirited, assertive collection on which she began to reveal her mettle as a tunesmith, not to mention as a vocalist of increasingly soulful depth. She earned high praise for the wickedly sultry "Slave 4 U," as well as for the forceful "Overprotected" and the gentle "I'm Not A Girl, Not Yet A Woman." The album's was quickly followed by Britney's motion picture debut, "Crossroads," which proved that she has the talent and box-office pull to be a multifaceted superstar. "One of the true joys of my life and career has been trying out new things," Britney says. "I've loved every step of this journey I'm on. I love singing and dancing and acting and songwriting... it all energizes and inspires me." It's that philosophy that has sent Britney "In The Zone," a project that shows this ever-growing and ever-exciting at her absolute best... or as she would say, "for now." "I can't imagine ever reaching the point where I've hit the wall," she concludes. "There's always something new and challenging to tackle. I can't wait to see what happens next."

5 of 5 I Give This Album 5 Stars (Excellent Album) Thursday, September 29, 2005
msmiley_3 from Troy, PA

I have this album and it is by far the best album that Britney has came out with. It has the coolest dance songs like "The Hookup," "Me Against The Music" and her biggest dance hit on the album "Toxic." Those are just a some of the many incredible dance songs off the album. I don't like slow songs very much, but i loved the song "Everytime" it's a slow song off the album and it was a very good written and sang song. She proves to be one of the most daring singers on the planet with her sext up songs "Touch Of My Hand" and "Breathe On Me." Which are both very great songs and have a very great grove to them. She pushes the limits and that is what makes her a great artist. With 76 million albums sold worldwide, Britney is truly a pop culture phenominon. She is the pop princess with no compitition. The album "In The Zone" represents Britney at the next stage of her life as an artist and as a person. She is one artist who stands out more than any other, she is truly one of a kind.

5 of 5 Britney Spears is 'In the Zone' on new disc Tuesday, July 06, 2004
Chris from USA
Britney Spears is my all-time favorite living entertainer, and with each new album she gets better and better and more impressive. Don't hate her, people - though she may not have Christina's powerful vocals she sounds unique and pretty good overall (even the Matrix producers said she's underrated as a singer and that she possesses a good voice). In the Zone, her fourth Jive Records release on November 18, 2003, displays a Spears we never knew. This is the end of the innocence, folks. La Brit's her own person and she's gonna let ya know too! CNN said that this album would either make or break Britney and her career, and obviously she remains solid as a rock. Britney just needs a Grammy award. She's always been nominated since her debut single in 1998 with "...Baby One More Time," yet she's never won. With every hit reaching No. 1 in some country it's sure to say Britney Spears has earned herself another 15 minutes in the limelight. In the Zone is definitely a worthwhile purchase in my opinion. Keep singing, Brit! Love you. In the Zone rules!

smartie7_ from Mississauga, Ontario
Britney Spears has once again came out with a new cd. But this cd is totally different from al the others. It's all processed. All the songs have a rap vibe or techno. The msuic behind her singing is awful! And Im just saying, the Cd isnt the greatest. It's not Britney, we all know it.

5 of 5 'In The Zone' is AWESOME!!! Friday, November 21, 2003
AmericanEagleJRL from Santa Rosa, CA
I can't say enough good things about Britney's latest disc. It's chalk full of AWESOME songs that leave you wanting MORE MORE MORE!!! The only bad thing is Britney worked with Moby and R.Kelly. Both of them suck and so do the songs they produced. Those are 'Early Mornin' and 'Outrageous.' Other than that, brilliant CD!!!

5 of 5 Get IN THE ZONE with Britney! Friday, November 21, 2003
Dan1113 from Utah, USA
This is an incredible album. The main thing that stands out for me are Britney's vocals. They are absolutely amazing...you have not heard what Britney has to offer to the world until you have heard this album. Yes, I am Britney fan but I can say what is good and what is bad. You won't be seeing "BRITNEY IS PERFECT! IT'S ALL GREAT!!!!!" from me. This review is my honest evaluation of this album for its music. By the way, Britney co-write seven of the twelve songs. Now onto the songs! 1. Me Against the Music featuring Madonna - This is a good dance track, with fast beats. The presence of Madonna adds nicely to the track (where Britney and Madonna sing together), though I am not that fond of her speaking parts. All my people on the floor, let me see you dance -- this track definitely makes you do that 2. (I Got That) Boom Boom featuring the Ying Yang Twins - I heard this song for the first time when Britney performed it on TRL on November 10th. At the beginning, the twins came out and becoming rapping. I was thinking...what is going on?! Finally, Britney came and began singing. I really like this song. The beats and Britney's vocals are really good. The thing I dislike about this song are the Ying Yang Twins. I despise the parts of the song that they participate in. Don't get me wrong -- I can appreciate this type of music -- but all their random noises and their overall feel in this song are awful. I really think they shouldn't have been in this track. However, as harsh as it may seem, I simply ignore their presence in this song and focus on the parts where Britney is present and it turns into a really good song. The banjo rocks! It's very cool to see Britney singing this type of music...it really worked for her. 3. Showdown - Not my favorite track from the album but it is still okay. I think it could have been better -- I'm not really digging the beats and overall rhythm. However, toward the middle, it gets really good! I like that part. This is my least favorite track from the album but I like all the songs and thus, saying that a song is my least favorite isn't saying too much bad about the song. 4. Breathe On Me - Ooh...it's so hot in here and I need some air! I really like this song. This song has a Kylie Minogue feel to it. It is very cool to see Britney be daring, attempting something different, vocally-wise, than what she normally does. Props for her because it works! At the end, instead of saying the word "breathe," she just breathes...I thought this was a very cute touch. Very sensual song. 5. Early Mornin' - You can definitely feel Moby in this song. When I first started typing a review for this song, I began by saying "the vocals could have been stronger." However, I gave the song another listen. I no longer feel this way. The song talks about the night after partying and all...the way it is sung and was produced fits perfectly with the subject matter of the song. Britney also adds some spice to her voice that makes this song really nice to listen to. The talking part toward the end of the song...very good part that goes perfectly with the subject of the song as well. 6. Toxic - My favorite track from the album! This is a semi-fast-paced, FUN song! Great vocals and beats with some playing around (in both categories). I can just totally picture myself blasting this song in my car when I'm on my road trip this summer! 7. Outrageous - when I move my body! I like the repetition of the word Outrageous in this song. Again, the vocals are really good. Britney shows that she is definitely not a girl anymore! R Kelly did a nice job with the song. I just wanna be happy in a place where love is free! Can you take me there? Somebody? 8. Touch of My Hand - I will be bold...going to the places I can be out of control! The subject matter, of course, is masterbation. However, it is done very appropriately...so much to be one of my favorite tracks. The vocals, once again!, are very nicely. This song probably has the instrumentals/tunes that I like the most out of any song. Very soothing and calming. I love myself -- it's not a sin. 9. The Hook Up - Another fun track with a reggae feel to it. This song's catchy beats will make you grab someone and begin dancing! I especially like the middle part of this song. Britney, once again, attempted something different and it worked really nicely. 10. Shadow - Can you say best.vocals.ever.? WOW! This is a gorgeous song. Britney really gives it her all and hits it perfectly. The vocals are incredible and it's a very soothing song. I love this song! I hope it is a single. 11. Brave New Girl - Another fun song! I really like these fun songs on this album -- it gives the album a lot of variety. I agree with another reviewer on that it is a "cute, empowering" song -- definitely! However, I really like the bubbly, happy feeling to this song. This another song I can picture myself blasting in my car on my road trip in the summer! 12. Everytime - Why are we strangers when our love is strong? Why carry on without me? Every time I try to fly, I fall...without my wings, I feel so small. I guess I need you, baby... Another song with really nice vocals. I think that there could been a little less music and a little more Britney -- this could have made it stronger. However, it's still a great track -- very good! 13. Me Against the Music (Rishi Rich's Desi Kulcha Remix - This is just a remix of the first track on this album. It has Middle Eastern influences that work really nicely with the song -- nice remix! My Final Thoughts There were a few tracks I disliked on ...Baby One More Time, Oops!...I Did it Again, and even a couple on Britney. I can honestly say that all songs on In the Zone are incredible and you will love this album! Music lovers of all genres will find something for them here. I said this over and over in my review and I truly mean it -- Britney's vocals in In the Zone are INCREDIBLE and the songs (beats/tunes/etc) are GREAT. (Again, as stated, Britney co-write seven of the twelve new songs on this album.) In the words of a non-Britney fan after she heard a few songs off the album: Dang. I'm going to Have to buy it now -- her music has evolved and matured soo much. She has matured so much as a person and singer and her music has matured along with her. In the Zone is an absolutely fantastic album. Go get In the Zone! -Dan1113

5 of 5 Britney REALLY delivers with 'In The Zone' Wednesday, November 19, 2003

With every CD, Britney just seems to get better and better. And I like that. 'In The Zone' is quite possibly the best CD I've heard in quite some time. It's absolutely infectious. With a playlist offering so many different musical stylings, it's hard to know where to start. The reggae infused "The Hookup" is just fun. The kind of song that makes you just want to get up and dance. And dance I did! The song that stands out the most is "Toxic." It's definately Britney's best song to date. I love everything about it. It's perfect for driving around town with the windows down and the stereo blaring! Another shining point is "Breathe On Me." Starts off wonderfully with a sultry voice over by Britney and a killer beat. Even the ballads leave you wanting more. Britney has truly outdone herself. This CD will definately please her fans and if you're not fan, you might become one!
