| | Album Notes and Credits | Notes & Personnel Info | | Jazz-leaning popster Jamie Cullum marries a singer-songwriter sensibility to a breezy, often swinging feel and a cross-genre vision that encompasses, variously, R&B, rock, electronica, and traditional balladry. Cullum's wide palette is reflected on the compilation IN THE MIND OF JAMIE CULLUM, the pianist/singer's installment of a mix series that allows artists to select and assemble tracks that reflect their aesthetic. | | Not surprisingly, old-school jazz is well represented; the set sports cuts from Herbie Hancock and Charles Mingus. Tunes by Nina Simone and Luiz Bonfa also appear, along with unexpected inclusions like Roni Size's head-bobbing "Brown Paper Bag" and Elbow's "Station Approach." The result is an intriguing peek into Cullum's far-reaching influences. Devoted Cullum fans will definitely want to pick up the disc, if only for the two originals he contributes, which are unavailable elsewhere. | | In the Mind of Jamie Cullum is essentially a mixtape album put together by the pianist/vocalist himself for the purposes of turning you on to the artists who turn him on. Featured here are such eclectic cuts as Donavon's "Get Thy Bearings," Nina Simone's "I Think It's Going to Rain Today," Mark Murphy's "Stolen Moments," Clipse and Pharrell Williams' "Mr. Me Too," and others. Also included are two previously unreleased tracks by Cullum himself. While the album is somewhat of a mixed bag, it nonetheless reveals Cullum to be a sophisticated music aficionado whose broad taste seems to jibe with his own crossover jazz/pop aesthetic. ~ Matt Collar | Producer: Jamie Cullum (Compilation) |
