| | | In the early 1980s, Israel's celebrated novelist Amos Oz traveled throughout his country, recording its history as spoken by its inhabitants. First published in English 10 years ago, this timeless, astonishingly relevant work has been updated to include events of the past decade. Annotation: IN THE LAND OF ISRAEL, a book of essays about Amos Oz's travels there during the war with Lebanon, was the source of heated controversy when it was published in Israel in 1983. The essays combine factual reporting and interviews with Oz's personal feelings about the conflict and about his country.
| Author Bio| Amos Oz | | Born Amos Klausner, Oz was raised in Jerusalem and attended an Orthodox Jewish school. Rebelling against his conservative and domineering scholar-father, he left home at 14, changed his name, and joined a kibbutz, where he espoused the leftist politics of David Ben-Gurion. He served in the Israeli army and studied at Hebrew University in Jerusalem, becoming skilled as a writer and teaching English and literature in the kibbutz school. His novels are rooted in Israeli society, and he is both a fearless innovator and a realist, always deeply involved in Israel's politics and struggle for survival. |
