A prosperous and respected Kansas farmer, his wife and his two teenage children are wantonly and brutally slaughtered. The murderers are two mindless ex-convict drifters: Perry Smith (Robert Blake) and Dick Hickock (Scott Wilson). Neither of the men are sane enough to regret their crime. The story penetrates the inner workings of the criminals minds as it follows their purposeless meandering through Mexico and the United States in evasion of the law. After more than a year of wandering, the hunted men are finally caught, tried and in a dramatic conclusion condemned to hang. "4 Stars! Incisive, Engrossing..." Leonard Maltin, Movie & Video Guide
 Editor's Note
IN COLD BLOOD is Richard Brooks' stylish and powerful 1967 drama adapted from Truman Capote's novel about a shocking real-life murder case. This daring cinematic portrait employs flashbacks to fully examine what drives an individual to commit thoughtless and brutal crimes, while using a highly innovative jazz score by Quincy Jones to capture the moody atmosphere. Capote's own role as researcher-narrator of the young criminals' intense friendship, fantasies, and troubled lives is effectively brought to the screen in this striking, groundbreaking drama. Two aimless drifters, Perry Smith (Robert Blake) and Dick Hickock (Scott Wilson), target the home of Kansas businessman Herbert Clutter. After breaking into the house, they find no money, and Smith and Hickock brutally kill the entire Clutter family. They escape the scene of the crime and head for Mexico, but they eventually go back to the States, ultimately returning to Kansas. After being chased for almost a year, the troubled drifters are captured and sentenced to death.

In Cold Blood (the movie) seems so quaint in this era of tell-alls and Law and Order spin-offs, but I can't imagine how the typical moviegoer felt watching this in 1967. A movie that offers the perspective of real-life killers, where a farm family is brutally murdered and justice is a blah solution? No thanks. When does Dr. Doolittle start? Writer/director Richard Brooks' Oscar-nominated adaptation holds up today because what's shocking then is now an appropriately stark, bare-bones look at two losers who get in way over their heads. Dick Hickock (Scott Wilson) recruits his friend, ex-con Perry Smith (Robert Blake), into a big score. While serving time in jail, Dick's cellmate talked about working on the Clutter farm in Holcomb, Kansas....read the full review |
