5 of 5 IMSI FloorPlan 3D v.11.0 Monday, December 03, 2007 Thirdson88 from Chicago
Easy to use and quick to load. Was this review helpful?
1 of 5 "Disappointed" Friday, November 30, 2007 A Customer from West Chester, Ohio
I was so looking forward to using this software to build my first floor plan. So I installed it and tried to start using it. I resized a window, the program exits, no message. Everything I had done was lost. Okay, download the patch. Attempt to adjust a wall, program abends; again all work lost. Now download another update to the 11.2 minor release. Now, no exits or abends.
Concerning its operation, it does not show room dimensions but its area in square feet. What do I need with this? All floor plans give you room dimensions. This and some other counter-intuitive actions demonstrate that this program doesn't provide what people need.
The program definitely takes some getting use to. There is definitely a development focus on the 3D visualization but the basic floor plan workings are lacking. Also, I still can't get the roof pitch set right, no matter what I do.
As I said, "disappointed".

3 of 5 Eh! Friday, November 30, 2007 J from Reno, NV
This thing is hard to use. I wish the people who designed this would have taken a lesson from the CAD world in the way their tools work. The zoom feature sucks in creation mode and the viewing angles for real 3D mode are worse than suck...they are horrible. Why can I only view it from like 3 angles? LAME! Cool idea with VERY bad programing behind it. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Excellent Product Sunday, August 12, 2007 A Customer from VA
This is an excellent product, but there will be a learning curve. I was comfortable with the product in two days. I would play with couple of test projects and then start working on the real project. Was this review helpful?

I am not an advid user of this type of software, but thought it would be fun to try. I have been a contractor for 12 years now and am fimiliar with floorplans. Floorplan 3D has alot to offer if you can take the time to learn the application. It might be worth it if you were doing a larger addition, but for a small project just get out the old pen and paper as it would be alot quicker. If you just want to play around and impress your friends with a cool drawing, then this is great fun. Would be good for a small business selling construction services to customers, for a - easy to do - professional presentation. Was this review helpful?

This software is one of several design programs that I have used, and all require time and energy to learn (this is no exception) - so be prepared. Overall a good company and good product, especially for the price. Was this review helpful?

Program has many facets to it, after you learn to use it. The "Tutorial" in the .pdf help file takes you through all the basics to get you started. But to really use the programs power, you must visit the IMSI Floorplan 3D forum on the internet. There you will discover the power that this program offers. It takes familiarity with "layers" common to many CAD and Graphic programs. Once you understand, you can make your own custom level, that includes just porches, just garages, just about anything you would like.
CONS: for me it seems to be terribly sluggish. When I click on an object to move it, I have to wait up to 40 seconds for it to confirm the selection, then it won't move right away, (AMD X2 64 running at 2 gigahertz, 1 gig DDR2 memory, 128M NVIDIA graphics card). All my other programs are fast.
This program delivers what it says. Take some time to do the Tutorial and browse the Forums online, and you will see what this IMSI Floorplay 3D program can do. Was this review helpful?

[Note: Review is shortened & improved since 1st attempt to "post":]
I'd rate 4 stars overall on FloorPlan 3D v.11 --it's a great value price now, and came pronto. It does rather well in laying out a conventional house floorplan. I'm almost finished with the existing plan for my house which I want to remodel. (My plan needed to be restarted, after I got more of a feel how FloorPlan really works best.)
The insertion of FloorPlan's numerous standard objects into the plan works quite well --e.g., walls (4", 6" or 8" thick), doors, windows, etc., of various standard sizes. Once you learn the drill, the objects snap in quickly. For a while, the standard sizes for windows & doors seemed too limited; then I searched more (see below) and discovered how to "customize" the sizes. I haven't tried any cabinets or furniture, trims, etc., yet.
The "Help" function is simply the Acrobat (.pdf) file of documentation for the program --without any index! No context-sensitive help. That was a problem until I stumbled on the non-obvious "search" function: right-click on the PDF document, and a context menu offers "Search" (in Acrobat Reader 8 anyway). You can search on a word or phrase like "customize objects" to find what's been eluding you. That helps. By the way, the tutorial requires use of the same PDF document.
Other limitations: "locations" (levels) are just ground floor and second floor. No split level, like my garage floor being 6" below the house floor. I can add a "slab," but it evidently has to be same as "ground floor" elevation.
All in all, FloorPlan v.11 seems a great value (with its present price and rebate offer) for a versatile floorplan layout & room design program, within its few limitations. I can't comment yet on the roof design process, various 3D views and "lighting" options for imaging the house--but those tools look handy. Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 Very good for doing a routine floorplan Thursday, May 03, 2007 David U from Costa Mesa, CA
FloorPlan 3D v.11: This rates about 4 stars max. in my judgment, so far. For laying out a conventional house floorplan it does rather well. I'm still finishing the layout for my existing house which I want to enlarge, and I've only worked on it off and on --mainly one full afternoon, after reading a bit and trying the tutorial a few days earlier. The first try on my own house needed to be restarted, after getting a better feel how FloorPlan really works. (Originally I tried the plan on Google SketchUp and after a while, could see that SU wouldn't work for walls needing a thickness, or roof with overhang, interior views, etc. FloorPlan handles those well but with limitations. The mouse operations also differ between the two programs when doing wall layouts, which didn't help my learning curve. By the way, I'm an engineer but not with CAD experience.)
The insertion of FloorPlan's standard objects into the plan works well --e.g., walls (4", 6" or 8" thick), doors, windows, etc., of standard size. Once you learn the drill, the objects snap in nicely. Wall layout took some getting used to. It was a bit baffling and frustrating at the start until learning from experience how the program "thinks." You need to pay attention to which mode is active for the mouse. Also, the standard sizes are limited for the "objects." (Regular doors are limited to 30", 36", 60" & 72" std widths, but in my house I have some 24" and even 26" and 28" wide ones, with no way to model them to scale. There is also a large open doorway that's wider (84") than a standard one (48" max), and I can't find how to model it --nor to erase out just part of the wall, yet. I haven't tried any cabinets or furniture, trims, etc., either.
The "Help" function is simply the PDF (.pdf) file of documentation for the program --without an index section! Not interactive like others. That was frustrating until I stumbled on the non-obvious search function: right-click on the document, and a context menu offers "Search." (In Acrobat Reader 8 anyway) Click that, a dialog box appears; enter your word/phrase, click "search" button, and it will list the occurrences in the PDF document, & take you to one you click. That helps. By the way, the tutorial requires following the same PDF document. It helps a lot to know how Reader works.
Other limitations: "locations" (levels) are just ground floor and second floor. No split level, like my garage floor being 6" below the house floor. I can add a "slab," but it evidently has to be same as "ground floor" elevation.
All in all, FloorPlan seems a great value (with its present price and rebate offer) for a conventional floorplan layout job, within its limitations. (Maybe a new version is in the offing??) I can't comment yet on the roof design options, various 3D views and "lighting" options for imaging the house. Was this review helpful?
2 of 2 customers found this review helpful. 5 of 5 Great value Monday, April 23, 2007 Steve from Houston, TX
I bought this product to help plan an addition to my current home. It's not the most intuitive program to use, but once I got the hang of it I have found it far more flexible than one may expect from a program at this price point. I have only played with the floorplan functionality at this point, so I'm not sure to what extent it addresses structural engineering, but even if it does none of that it should save you hundreds of dollars to walk into an architect's office with a scaled floorplan. This suite is very powerful for your floor plan design. It takes some time to learn all the details, but after that it's very simple to use. I am still on the learning curve, but I am pretty satisfied with this product. Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 good for entry level Friday, March 30, 2007 Ashish Patel (its_ashish@yahoo.com) from Lakeland, FL
if you wanna do some small remodeling jobs or even new construction for small projects this is very user friendly software. Was this review helpful?
2 of 5 very basic and cumbersome Tuesday, March 27, 2007 A Customer from St Louis, MO
I got this because it was free after rebate. It is cumbersome to use and fairly basic. For example to put a sink in you have to have the correct cabinet first, instead of just having the sink put the corret type of cabinet in. In addition a huge downfall is their library of structures. There should be a edit function where you can creat your own cabinet, instead you have to choose from a limited number. Was this review helpful?
3 of 5 Pretty good Thursday, March 22, 2007 A Customer from mountain view, ca
After opening the box, I've spent about 2 hours drawing my current house (I didn't finish). So this review is based upon that experience.
Generally its pretty damn easy to draw walls and rooms. I found one bug: at one place in the drawing, it would not let me draw a perpendicular wall; it would only let me draw a wall on a funny diagonal. Also, there are some details I don't yet know how to do: transition in floor height, roof/ ceiling transition from the single-story to the 2-story part of my house, flat roofing, etc. So some stuff isn't as easy as other stuff. Floorplan 3D 11 is an excellent product at a terrific price. I was looking for an applicaion to do furniture layouts for a new house. Floorplan 3D does that and much more. I have not yet tapped the resources of this application but so far it has proven to be very versatile, robust and easy to use. If you're looking for an inexpensive CAD tool this is an excellent choice. Was this review helpful?
