J. Rodriguez (percussion). | | Producers: Hugo Dwyer, Roy Nathanson, Arthur Moorhead. | | During the '80s, a different kind of jazz musician entered the New York scene, influenced by punk, Ornette, and Mingus, as well as the resurgent '80s art world, a sort of performance art jazz exemplified by John Zorn's Naked City, Tim Berne, the Lounge Lizards, and the Jazz Passengers. While just as self-referential as the others, the Passengers were flexible, even exuberant players. And with its fluent vibraphone and saxophone angularities, IMPLEMENT YOURSELF sounds a bit like Eric Dolphy's OUT TO LUNCH traced over in dayglo or abstract splashes of paint. Some of the Passengers later albums are weighed down somewhat by guest rock vocalists, even though it made perfect sense for Deborah Harry, Elvis Costello and others to try their hand at "jazz" singing with this crew. On IMPLEMENT YOURSELF however, they struck just the right balance between post-modern irony and musical substance. |

| | Professional Reviews | | Down Beat (11/90) - 3.5 Stars - Good Plus _ "...They're proficient soloists, but this really isn't a blowing band--they prefer to set the listener into a fun house mise-en-scene...This is song-writing as shock tactics..." |
