 | Idiocracy By: David Bezanson - filmcritic.com DVD Reviews Published on: 12/29/2006 5:45 PM | |
Political correctness is an annoying term, and an even more annoying concept. At first it was supposedly bad to be "politically incorrect," then it was supposed to be good, then Bill Maher used it as the name of his lame, pseudo-political celebrity talk show, and it became meaningless....read the full review |
 | Idiocracy - DVD By: Margaret Williams - Cinema Blend DVD Reviews Published on: 1/22/2007 10:55 PM | | Idiocracy has a lot to offer as far as social commentary goes and Mike Judge keeps up his opinion without pausing to worry about what others will think. That's what makes him so good. But, unlike his other film and the lasting effect of Office Space and its cast of characters, Idiocracy won't be so loved and memorable. It's a good film for the time that it is running, but after the movie is over, it is not so endearing. Idiocracy is definitely a film to watch, but not necessarily a DVD to buy....read the full review |

| | Professional Reviews | Box Office 3 stars out of 5 -- "There are several moments in Judge and Etan Cohen's script so hysterically funny, and the satire on display is so rudely on-target at times, that IDIOCRACY demands attention." 10/01/2006 p.41Entertainment Weekly "It's sort of BRAVE NEW WORLD crossed with BRITNEY & KEVIN: CHAOTIC..." -- Grade: B 01/19/2007 p.65 Rolling Stone 3 stars out of 4 -- "It's the stuff cult legends are made of..." 02/08/2007 p.80 Ultimate DVD 3 stars out of 5 -- "[An] unhinged satire....It's entertaining stuff..." 06/01/2007 p.118 Los Angeles Times 9 of 10 Judge has a gift for delivering brutal satire in the trappings of low comedy and for making heroes out of ordinary people whose humanity makes them suspect in a world where every inch of space, including mental, is mediated..."Idiocracy" is Judge's pitch-black, bleakly hilarious vision of an American future so bespoiled by rapacious corporations and so dumbed-down by junk culture that the president of the United States is a three-time "Smackdown!" champion and former super porn-star...The plot, naturally, is silly and not exactly bound by logic. But it's Judge's gimlet-eyed knack for nightmarish extrapolation that makes "Idiocracy" a cathartic delight. - Carina Chocano Variety 7 of 10 The thought of the U.S. being run and populated by morons and lugheads 500 years from now doesn't seem that far off given our current circumstances, which is why Mike Judge's "Idiocracy" is absolutely a satire for its time. What Judge is less sure of here than in his previous, perfectly pitched live-action comedy "Office Space," is how to build a complete movie around his key ideas...Judge is terrific on the movie's big strokes, and its needling of how truly bad things can get when dumb folks have power, but his script and direction struggle with the details and individual scenes tend to fall considerably short of their comic potential. - Robert Koehler
