Introducing the best blend of portability and essential features! The ThinkPad T40 notebook is a full 30 percent thinner than its T30 predecessor. In fact, the ThinkPad T40 has a travel weight of only 4.9 pounds - almost one-half pound lighter - and measures about 1-inch thin. The redesigned ThinkPad T40 is an ideal machine for anyone on the go who needs a lightweight notebook with extensive functionality. Thinkpad's legendary Think Strategy of Innovation for business advantage has led to the creation of the Ultrabay Slim, making ThinkPad the first adopter of the 9.5 mm optical drive - 31 percent smaller than standard optical notebook drives. Combined with a unique thermal design to reduce system operating temperature, this innovation helps slim down the ThinkPad T40 without losing any performance.

5 of 5 Just what I wanted Sunday, January 04, 2009
G. Johnson from Naples, FL
I have a desktop with Vista and wanted a laptop to run some of my old XP programs. This machine has been perfect do far (about 3 weeks). Except for an almost invisible blemish on the keyboard, it looks brand new. The 40GB drive is small, but I can use external flash drives if need be. I'm using it for dial-up on AOL so I don't need it for Wi-Fi. My desktop has Broadband, so this is a backup machine. You can assign a Windows/Start key by clicking Access IBM on the Desktop, then Configure, then Map Keys. It is light, fast enough for basic computing, and the quality seems much higher than the price.

5 of 5 Just right for my child Monday, December 22, 2008
David from san antonio, texas
I purchased this laptop for my daughter for college. The only thing we had to do was to exchange the battery. A single call immediately addressed this situation and a replacement was on our doorstep in a couple of days. I had to update BIOS and many drivers/software but being a full time network admin. . . this was no problem! My daughter has used it heavily since then for school and pleasure and has enjoyed a very stable system. I added a wireless card and it works just fine in the slot provided.

5 of 5 Refurb'd T40 is just what I needed Monday, May 12, 2008
A Customer from Portland, OR
Product arrived when promised and is actually better than specified as spec states CD/RW and delivered item included a DVD. OS install is perfect. Minimal fluff so it boots quickly and works like new. I plan to upgrade memory to 1.5 or 2.0 GB.

5 of 5 Bullet-proof Laptop, Great Savings Saturday, April 05, 2008
A Customer from Ohio
I had a T-40 at my last job and wanted to smack the guy who took it and replaced it with a Dell 620 at the end-of lease trade-in time. Since I now work out of my home office, my wife has little PC access, so a laptop was a good choice, and this T-40 an obvious one. The unit came very quickly, and was well-packaged by IBM. There are "USED EQUIPMENT" stickers on *everything*, so there will be no question you've received a refurbished unit, but if it hadn't been for this, it was hard to tell this computer from new. The only thing I needed to do to make it "perfect" in appearance was to put some clear tape over the COA sticker on the bottom. (The original clear had been pulled off, and it was sticky.) I think I can deal with that! The first thing I did after firing it up and installing my anti-virus program was to download and run Lenovo's system test program, and everything passed. Further performance has been fine. A Wi-Fi card left over from my previous T-40 connects me to my wireless network. Sure I'd prefer to have it internal, but at $400 for this machine, I'm not going to complain. I ordered 1MB of memory from Buy.com last week, and with that, this machine should be a great, long-term addition to our tech toolbox.

5 of 5 I am satisfied Sunday, February 10, 2008
A Customer from Dallas, TX
I spent $14 to buy a Mini PCI WiFi card on eBay. The cheapest b/g card (not the b-only card) you could get is about $11 (including shipping). There will be an 1802 error if you buy an Intel card that is not made for IBM. Google it you can find the easy solution. The 512MB RAM takes up both slots so will cost more to add RAM. I found a screw loose inside the machine when installing the mini PCI card.

5 of 5 Great laptop and great delivery speed Sunday, February 10, 2008
William Onwuka from Hackensack, NJ
Great laptop, looks brand new and it was shipped sooner to my home then I initially thought it would. This is my 3rd ibm t series laptop and I must say that i am enjoying this one alot. Only two things though. Mine had built in wi-fi and i wished i bought another for my wife to use at the cheaper price.

5 of 5 Great Deal ! Saturday, February 09, 2008
Tim from Whitney, Tx.
I read all the previous reviews before purchasing this refurbished laptop.I have always purchased Dell PC's and was not fimilar with anything else. The quality of this machine is a cut above my Dell's.This was noticeable as soon as I lifted the it out of the box.The case is more solid than my other laptops. When you open the lid the look and feel are of quality not found in other machines at twice the price of this one.The processer seems to run fast and screen appearance is good.I bought the mini wifi card off ebay for less than $30 shipping and all.Which when installed I'm told makes this a true Centrino machine. The best feature of this whole deal was when I went to IBM support to install the card.I normally would have paid someone to put it in for me, but they had step by step instructions with pictures and movies.I installed it myself with ease in about 25 minutes.I never new how much difference quality support can make! I updated the bios with ease while I was there. The only draw back to buying a 4 year old machine is all the Windows updates that were needed.I have DSL at 1.5MB download speed and it took me about 4 hours to download and install all the updates needed. The waranty seems to be none even though the advertisement says different.Over all this is the best PC purchase I've ever made for the money!

4 of 5 No wifi card Monday, January 28, 2008
A Customer from Mission Viejo, CA
Great deal, but no Wifi card. Was not clear in the description, and one reviewer said his came with one. In the email buy.com sent me later for a review of this product, the product description had magically added "NO WIFI". Would have been nice to know beforehand, and we spent another $40 to buy a Wifi card.

5 of 5 Excellent Laptop Purchase Friday, January 25, 2008
Daryle from Yukon, OK
Having used an IBM T42 at work, I already knew that I would be very satisfied with the T40. I did spend about $30 on Ebay to purchase a mini-PCI wireless b/g card to add to the Laptop. I really like the durability of the machine and the keyboard/touchpad are very easy to use. From a functionality and visual standpoint, it is hard to even notice that this is a "recertified" unit.

4 of 5 Good, but not mindblowing Monday, January 21, 2008
Steve P. from Orlando, FL
Pricing was good, but let's face it - this is a four-year old laptop, so don't expect state-of-the-art performance. IBM did a pretty good job on the refurbishment, but it was still somewhat obvious that this was a previously used machine - shiny spots on the more-frequently used keys, small scratches here and there in out-of-the-way places, etc. None of those issues really bother me, but I was quite disappointed with the battery life - I'm doing good to get 1.5 hours from the stock battery, when I should be getting about three times that. Still, you get what you pay for, and this machine will be handy for when I'm away from the desktop.

5 of 5 "Surely the reputation of this machine is ove Thursday, January 10, 2008
kidztchr7 from Lexington, KY
I have been a laptop aficionado for years, and currently own four (one from each major manufacturer). I had not, however, owned the famous ThinkPad. Finally, curiosity got to me. Could that keyboard actually be the best on the planet? (I had zero complaints about my Dell's.) How about that build quality? (My HP has been through heck, and never once failed me.) Was the ThinkPad T40 all THAT great in comparison? I thought the hype about the famous ThinkPad might be a tad overblown....until mine came. The beauty is in the simplicity. OMG...until you've typed on this keyboard, you don't know what tactile 'feel' really is. Seriously. And built quality? It just looks solid, feels solid, works like a tank, and is light enough to carry around. In short, I have faster, lighter, smaller, and prettier laptops than my T40. They are all in my closet. The simplicity of the timeless and wonderful XP Pro makes me wish Vista would disappear from my Toshiba. The extended battery I am using gets a solid 4 hours with everything set to high performance. The screen is almost as bright as my 'super bight' Sony, and the fact that it is not a widescreen failed to bother me after the first week. The IBM update system, PC Doctor, etc., are great, and second to none. To own the ThinkPad T40 is to love it. Add a little more memory and you will understand why it is a world-class unit by which all others are measured.

5 of 5 Great laptop at this price Tuesday, January 01, 2008
Dung Le from Lincoln, Nebraska
I ordered this laptop when it was on sale, I paid 385$ for it and completely satisfied with what I paid for. I tested few other new laptops my friends bought at the similar price (~ 400$) and found that mine (although being re-certified) performs better and faster owning to the fact that it has a Pentium M chipset while those new one have a Celeron chipset. When I decided to buy this, it were written in the website that this computer does not have wireless adapter, I was ready to order an adapter plug in, but when I received the laptop, it turned out to be a nice surprised since it does have a built-in wireless adapter and functions perfectly. I also tested the holding capacity of the battery and found that it can hold some charge which allows me to use the laptop for several hours (3 hours at the least) powered by the battery. Some reviews on the net says that they can buy this same laptop at ebay for a lower price, however, I believe I did not overpay for this item when performance and reliability is taken into consideration.

5 of 5 Thinkpad T40 Saturday, December 29, 2007
A Customer from Montana
With the $30 discount for purchasing with a Buy.com CC, the total price was $369...which is comparable to the latest crop of ASUS EePC and other low cost laptops hitting the market. The laptop works very well with 512 RAM. I want to upgrade RAM to 2GB, and maybe look at buying an internal WiFi card on eBay (usually $30). Other than that it has been an excellent purchase for the intended purpose, which is doing research with remote sensors and DAQ hardware/software. Good stuff: Thinkpad quality, internal optical drive, low weight, 14" screen, keyboard, value. Caveats: 1024x768 sometimes a little cramped.

5 of 5 Wrong adapter cord Friday, December 28, 2007
A Customer from Illinois
My only disappointment was the wrong cord was sent with this item. It was a 3 pin adapter and a 2 pin adapter cord came with. I had emailed about the problem but they wanted me to send the laptop back to another business etc. I was thankful I found a 3 pin adapter at home....otherwise this item would not have been here for Christmas.

5 of 5 nice machine Wednesday, December 26, 2007
A Customer from nj
I owned a T42p and paid a bunch of cash for it, and saw this for a fraction and thought it would be a nice machine much. I then provided the info to my in laws and they took my advice and purchased the machine. The machine turned out to better then my expectations; IBM's refurbishing team did an excellent job making the machine look new. The only problem with the machine is no wireless, but I will look to correct problem with ebay. Overall a nice machine for the money, that should last as long as it's usefulness.

Once again Buy.com has unbeatable deal. A co-worker and myself ordered each one of these refurbished units. They look like new. It's hard to beat a thinkpad and at $400 that's even better.

5 of 5 The Thinkpad T40 is the best business laptop I hav Tuesday, December 11, 2007
DTS from Seattle, WA.
I own this exact model of Thinkpad (model 2373). It really is a well built machine capable of handling everthing that I have thrown at it. The wireless adapter works great. The T40 has a program called Access Connection installed. That program makes it especially easy to go from place to place and connect to the internet. I much prefer Windows XP Pro over Vista and the T40 comes with XP Pro. The screen is clear and bright, it is not one of the new widescreen models but that has not been a problem for me. The 32MB dedicated ATi video card runs all forms of video without a hick-up. I did purchase and install another 1GB of memory for my T40. Not sure I really needed to but I like knowing I have the extra torque. The T40 really is light at under 6lbs with everything packed. However I believe the best factor is the build quality, which I find second to none in the world of laptops. This machine feels solid. The keyboard is the best I have ever used. The feature set are the same found on the latest T series models. All in all I give the Thinkpad T40 a 5. At the price I paid for such high quality it really deserves that high score.
