Coming from a label as big as TVT, Hyphy Hitz is a surprisingly aware collection, covering enough of the big names and adding the proper amount of underground heat to be considered informed. Besides that, it's a heck of good time, working just as well as a party starting mixtape as an overview. Three verses into the opening "Yadadamean" from the A'z and the listener is introduced to the kind of slang slinging that's so important to hyphy. "Yididi-scray, yididi-thick/Pow bow candy strips inside of the whip" goes the track, while "going dumb," showin' your "thizz face," wearing your "stunner shades," and the rest of the basic lingo is dropped throughout the disc in choruses that are as catchy as they are screwball. Godfather E-40, who has been promising to publish his own hyphy dictionary for years, is well represented in guest appearances and by his own "Gouda." The man who coined the term by turning the word "hyper" into "hyphy," Keak da Sneak, is also heavy on the track list and in the addition of the late Mac Dre, the popular Federation, and the MVP of 2006, Mistah FAB, makes the lineup all-star. You could ask for some Too Short or any number of upstarts, but you can't deny the collection is one of the first necessary hyphy comps to appear outside the underground world of mixtapes. Go forth and get dumb. ~ David Jeffries | Producer: Daniel Faddis "D Animals"; Little E "Droop E"; Aaron Reppert "Wax"; Ricardo "Rick Rock" Thomas; D1 the Knockaholik; Seanie T.; Cheesy; AZ; Keak Da Sneak; Mac Dre; Rick Rock; Miami The Most | Engineer: Andrew Sidel; Dale Everingham; Daniel Faddis "D Animals"; Aaron Reppert "Wax"; Dustin "Nump" Perfetto; Cheesy |
