| | | Features: DVD, Widescreen, Dolby, Digital Audio, English, Dolby Digital (5.1), Dual Layer, No Longer Produced Based on Tom Clancy's bestseller, directed by John McTiernan (Die Hard) and starring Sean Connery and Alec Baldwin, The Hunt For Red October seethes with high-tech excitement and sweats with the tension of men who hold Doomsday in their hands.
A new technologically-superior Soviet nuclear sub, the Red October, is heading for the U.S. coast under the command of Captain Marko Ramius (Connery). The American government thinks Ramius is planning to attack. A lone CIA analyst (Baldwin) has a different idea: he thinks Ramius is planning to defect, but he has only a few hours to find him and prove it-because the entire Russian naval and air commands are trying to find him, too. The hunt is on! "The first you-gotta-see-it blockbuster of the '90s." Joel Siegel, Good Morning America
 Editor's Note
In the tradition of DIE HARD and PREDATOR, director John McTiernan presents audiences with yet another techno thriller: THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER. Sean Connery plays Captain Marko Ramius, a dissatisfied Russian commander who navigates his submarine towards America in an attempt to defect. Soviet intelligence claims that Ramius is a warmonger and that he plans to launch nuclear missiles at the United States. Jack Ryan (Alec Baldwin), an iconoclastic CIA agent, believes otherwise: American spies have determined that the submarine is powered by a stealth engine. In order to save the "caterpillar drive" and avoid a nuclear incident, Agent Ryan must board the Red October and assist Captain Ramius in its navigation to U.S. waters. Both murky and captivating, the underwater visual and sound effects are reminiscent of DAS BOOT. Once again director McTiernan produces a winning film with a jagged plot, a well acted script, and plenty of explosions.

This is my all-time favorite movie BY FAR...it seems like every time I watch it I figure out something new to the plot. In other words, I've watched this probably at least 20 times but it STILL has not gotten old. I can probably watch it another 25 times and never get tired of it. Definitely a must-see and probably a must-buy. Other people said the dvd version was ugly or had a bad picture...I don't think for most people it's very easy to tell a difference, and in my opinion, the dvd version doesn't look any worse than the VHS, so that in itself shouldn't turn you away.
If you liked Crimson Tide or Das Boot, DEFINITELY get Hunt for Red October. If you have ever read ANY tom clancy books and enjoyed them, I HIGHLY recommend you at least check out Hunt for Red October. By the way the actual book by clancy is very good as well. Was this review helpful?

5 of 5 Wonderful Movie Wednesday, December 29, 1999 richie from tulsa ok
Almost any movie by John Mctiernan is a great movie. Just look at his others like Die Hard, Die Hard with a vengeance, and Crimson Tide. Anyone who says this movie is not a 9 or 10 must have not watched it. Sean Connery and Alec Baldwin bring it to life. A definite buy for anyone's collection. Was this review helpful?

Although this is one of my favorite movies. I'm not pleased with the DVD version. It appears grainy. I'm not a widescreen fan - so I was really disappointed that I had no other option. Was this review helpful?

5 of 5 Best submarine movie yet. Thursday, November 04, 1999 RayM from Georgetown, TX
This is the best of the best submarine thrillers. Sean Connery actually looks and sounds Russian. Alex Baldwin is a little weak as Jack Ryan, but, it is still a great movie. The underwater action is terrific. Crimson Tide comes in a distant 3rd. Was this review helpful?

I like the movie a lot, but they did a terrible job transfering this movie to DVD. The picture is annoyingly fuzzy and sometimes flickers. (Trust me, it's just this one - my other DVD's work perfectly fine). It might be worth it to wait for a newer/better release! Was this review helpful?
