2 of 5 I should have known better Friday, June 06, 2008
Don from Anaheim, CA

This computer is fine to check email and browse the web. However, the video card on this thing is terrible. It only goes up to 128 mb shared. Even the vista energy screensaver is choppy. I tried to look up the specs for this video card online before my purchase and couldn't find them. That should have told me right there. My bad.

1 of 5 Drama Wednesday, May 21, 2008
Gdub from Bladensburg, MD
I bought the laptop for my father as a gift. He lives 200 miles from me so I had the laptop shipped to his address. He opened it up and turned it on and got an error message indicating that Windows was not installed properly and that it had to restart. After pushing OK and restarting and getting the same message over and over again we knew something was wrong. So I had to drive down 2 weeks later to get the laptop and contact buy.com which in turn told me to contact hp.com. I chatted with an HP rep on IM but got disconnected, then chatted with another HP rep on IM describing the error message. He indicated that I would need to get a recovery disc which I would have to pay for shipping and handling $16. I told him I was not paying anymore money since the laptop was to come with Windows fully installed. After speaking with his supervisor he decided he was going to ship the disc to me for free. So now I have no idea what else may be wrong with the computer since I can't use it until I get the recovery disc in the mail. To much drama to get a decent laptop at a discount price. When I get the disc I will report back.

3 of 5 Display Disappoints ! Tuesday, May 06, 2008
N A D from Morrisville, NC
17" True Bright Wide on the HP DV9627CL Laptop Computer is quite a disappointment. It is just dull. Dunno if it is the NVDIA GeForce Go 7150M Graphics Card that is the culprit or that it is the True Bright Wide quality that is inherently not upto spec. So I am gonna return the product back. Hopefully, there won't be problems with that aspect and buy another one of higher quality even if it means having to shell out a few extra bucks. And, the small right Shift key is a problem that u dont' really want to get used to compared to other keyboard layouts. So two negatives for this product.

5 of 5 Great laptop for the price! Saturday, May 03, 2008
Luke Pack from Dixon, IL
As it is refurbished, I would never be able to tell. It runs good and starts well with vista. I did upgrade the ram since ddr2 is SO cheap! I had a TON of stuff to clean out of it as usual. They will not give me drivers for the remote that comes with the computer- this is unfortuanate as I know they have to be somewhere and I usually put fresh installs on these things. Anyhow, she performs well and movies play well to! I am VERY disapointed with support- but htat has nothing to do with the product- for me anyhow.

3 of 5 So So Tuesday, April 29, 2008
spowell from Woodinville, Wa
Laptop is great. As a computer. However I bought the machine primarily to be able to do some video editing and then burning of DVD's. While the proccessing of the videos and application software are great, the DVD drive which comes with it is of extreemly low quality and is unable to burn on most DVD media. It actually took me over a week to find a media type that it would burn. This was after 3 calls to an entirely unhelpful HP technical support.

4 of 5 Good value for the money. Wednesday, April 16, 2008
A Customer from Fort Collins, CO
Over all I am pleased with the laptop. I am some what disappointed with the Refurbisher. I have purchased Refurbished HP products and have always been impressed. This unit was filthy dirty from previous use and blue screened on the first boot. Once I cleaned it up it looks like new. The HP quality is as good as ever and I expect to use this laptop for years to come. Linux screams and Vista is slow, as expected.

5 of 5 Great buy. Great Price Thursday, March 20, 2008
A. Hargett from Philadelphia, PA
This was a great buy. I am overall happy with my purchase. It performs as expected. The only draw back is I can't figure out how to get rid of some of the programs that have been loaded onto the desktop (Yes I've tried going to "add/remove programs" and removing them from there, but some of the icons on the desktop are not listed there).

1 of 5 Was nice while it lasted ... Thursday, March 13, 2008
slpavman from Missouri
I got this laptop about 2 months ago. After trying to set up a dual boot with WinXP Pro a couple of times (WHY didn't they include a CD/DVD of Win Vista?!), I gave up and just decided that I would learn to deal with the Vista. Luckily I did as recommended, and made a system back-up/restore disk before I started messing around with it ... Anyway, the computer worked flawlessly at first. The wireless didn't seem to be as good/efficient as my son's Acer laptop, but would usually connect (it's pretty far to my D-Link wireless router). The large screen is gorgeous and I didn't have ANY problems with it (at first). There is plenty of hdd storage and the 2 GB of ram really help push the Vista. The battery life was about as expected (several hours when fully charged). I loved being able to pull my SD card from my digital camera and being able to put it right into the computer, great feature! This is especially nice with the SD format cards really coming down in price, so you can use them like a "portable hdd" or disk drive to take your data or songs with you. It runs games pretty well as long as they aren't "super graphic intensive" and the sound with the Altec Lansing built in speakers is better than expected! However ... after 2 months, I went to turn it on yesterday, heard the hdd "spin-up" and watched all of the lights come on ... after a couple minutes I realized the screen hadn't come on at all. I tried to "cont/alt/del" shut it down, but I couldn't hear or see anything happening. I tried several times and then just shut it down manually (holding the pwr button down for several seconds.) I tried to restart it several times, even pulling the battery out, for a few minutes to "clear everything". ALL to no avail. The funny thing is that just a couple of days ago I purchased the 2 year extended warranty plan for the laptop ... It's still under the original 90 day warranty, so tomorrow I'll call and try to figure out how I can send this back for repair/replacement. I REALLY hope that they can a least salvage my hdds, since I'd hate to have to re-install all of the programs I had already installed, AND lose the stuff that I have done and not backed up yet, sigh. I would recommend this laptop to anyone as long as it keep working ... I'll write another review after I see how the "return experience" goes.

5 of 5 Nice and BIG! Wednesday, March 12, 2008
A Customer from Hampton, Virginia
I had no idea when my laptop came in that it was going to be so huge! It's kind of heavy and I wouldn't want to carry it around all day because of it's size & weight but it's definitely a nice buy. The large screen is really nice and it's fairly easy to use. I don't really care for Vista much but the computer itself has no design flaws I've been able to notice and I've had it two weeks. Some people have said the small shift button on the right is an issue for them but it hasn't really been a problem for me and I've done a lot of typing on it since I got it. I Really like the way it has a FULL sized keyboard including a number pad! You can adjust the volume from pressing a touch screen button on your laptop and it even comes with a remote if you want to lay in bed and watch a dvd but don't want to worry with a mouse and cords. It's honestly a very nice buy for a very modest price. Given another chance, I'd totally buy it again. -Kat

5 of 5 Happy Customer! Monday, March 10, 2008
Jack from Larchmont, New York
Since the 19 reviews at time of purchase helped me with me decision to buy this refurbished notebook, I wanted to add one myself. * Condition of notebook on arrival was mint. Not ONE scratch, screen was flawless. Would not be able to tell this was refurbished if I didn't know. * Delivery time was slightly longer than expected, but that was due to Buy.com's policy of verifying different shipping address from billing address. You really can't fault them for that. * Performance of notebook is stellar. As other reviewers have stated, once you remove the included software (AOL, Vonage, etc.) the machine starts and runs with refreshing speed. * Wireless connectivity: I too had an issue with the wireless card connecting to my Linksys wireless router, but two brief chat sessions with the HP Helpdesk resolved the issue perfectly. Overall, a great shopping experience. Very happy customer. Don't let the "reconditioned" stigma scare you off - you won't regret buying this notebook.

5 of 5 Wish I could rate it hihger than 5! Wednesday, March 05, 2008
exprog from Reading, PA
Had this laptop for a little over a month. Wow! It has done everything I've thrown at it with ease. This includes video encoding (DVD to Divx), watching high definition (720p) video on Media Center via my network, video conferencing, and heavy multi-tasking. At any given time I will have Word, Firefox (with 13 tabs open), MS Money, Media Monkey, Outlook, and a half dozen more with no slow down whatsoever. I am power user so my use is somewhat different than an average user. Also Vista (Aero) runs butter smooth once bloatware is removed. Bottom line, do not hesitate to buy this great laptop unless you are looking for a gaming system, witch this is not. Quality is great, price unbeatable, performance...well, you know.

5 of 5 Very satisfied Tuesday, March 04, 2008
A Customer from Hutchinson, MN
Just received my laptop and so far I am very satisfied with it. I looked around for quite awhile looking for a quality laptop for a good price and found nothing for this good of a laptop for this good of a price. I was a little hesitant due to it being a recertified machine but I am very happy that I chose this one. No better deal out there!! The initial start up is a little slow but I hear that is common with Vista but once up and running it is very fast. Great price for a great machine. I would totally recommend it, great for home use.

3 of 5 Nice price and nice computer, but wireless problem Thursday, February 28, 2008
A Customer from cottonwood, mn
I love the look of the notebook and the screen is awesome. Computer looked new except someone had removed most of those stickers. Anyway,I had problems with the wireless card right out of the box. I'm pretty tech savy but I struggled for many hours including lots of internet searching for answers. I have two XP notebooks that were working fine on my wireless network. Not entirely sure if its HP or Vista that is the problem, or my 5 year old router that is supposed to be able to play well with Vista. But do a web search and you'll find lots of issues with HP DV6000 and DV9000 with the AMD processors and Broadcom wireless card. I finally contacted HP and they immediately sent out a shipping box, no questions asked. I haven't gotten my notebook back yet, so its too early to tell if it will be fixed. Sounds like they normally end up replacing the motherboard and all is well. Other than the wireless issue (obviously a huge issue) I really like the computer, even Vista isn't as bad as I was expecting. Again, I don't want to place all blame on this HP model as no one else has listed this complaint in their reviews. Just something I wish I had been aware of...

5 of 5 Nice for the price, and risks pay dividends Tuesday, February 26, 2008
A Customer from Orem, UT
After suffering through the return/replacement process of the first unit, which Buy.com handled relatively well, we finally received a fully functional laptop. We were a bit hesitant about buying re-certified, but for the price, it actually worked out just fine. The hardware seems to handle Vista Aero well in spite of the low Vista horsepower rating. DVDs play smoothly with HP's Quickplay. 2G SDRAM is a nice plus. Bootup is quick and painless, of course, after removing all the junk software. Wireless connectivity is a snap. We are not power users by any stretch of the imagination, and we certainly wouldn't recommend this laptop as a desktop replacement, but for a simple, inexpensive starter laptop with lots of nice features, it fits the bill comfortably. We expect several years of good use out of this laptop.

5 of 5 Good laptop Tuesday, February 19, 2008
A Customer from San Jose, CA
Looks like brend new, never used. I can not believe it's so chip. You need to clean/remove trial SOFT. 2 HDDs good to have for a system back up when you clean-install what you need. Nice to have all connectors at the sides, 0 at the back side. Plays movies nice and clear with good built-in sound; remote control small and good to have. Extra quick delivery for $0. Just happy! Why to pay $2k for equivalent tool, better replace it in time.

3 of 5 Nice - but... Thursday, January 31, 2008
A Customer from Fort Thomas, KY
I love most of what this computer has to offer, except... 1) when I received it, the left shift key did not work. If I remove the plastic key cover, I can depress the little thing that sticks up and it works, but as soon as I snap the key back on, it does not work. After an hour on the phone with HP support, the only solution is to send it back, which is an extreme pain and will take at least two weeks to get back. 2) the right shift key is so small, I miss it about 10% of the time. When I do miss it, I end up hitting one of arrow keys next to it, which highlights the lines I just typed, and, if I'm typing quickly, that line gets erased. I read reviews stating how much people disliked this feature, but thought I could overlook it based on the price and the fact that I am an accomplished typist. However, it is a huge drawback to this laptop, and makes me wish I had not purchased it.

4 of 5 Good value, refurbished was not an issue Thursday, January 31, 2008
A Customer from Oxford, CT
Overall I am very happy with the refurbished HP laptop. There was one small scratch below the keyboard, but otherwise the system appears ans functions as a factory fresh system. I'm not too crazy with the keyboard feel and or the touchpad, but they both work fine. I also use a Thinkpad and so far every laptop or notebook I have tried doesn't compare to the Thinpad trackpoint mouse and keyboard - but you pay a premium for those. No tax and free shipping was a nice bonus and the reason I bought through Buy.com. Once I removed some of the bloatware the system ran faster. So far I have left the HP assistant, but I don't see it assisting me with anything so far. The system came with Vista Home Premium. It seems ok, but slower than my 4 year old Thinkpad with XP. It so clear Microsoft is trying to copy the Mac experience. Not even a nice try - Vista is totally annoying.

5 of 5 Love it Thursday, January 31, 2008
Tom from Hagerstown, MD
I bought this from another retailer and I absolutely love it. The keyboard is a little hard to get used to. The right shift key is the size of a single key, and is easily missed, but the keyboard is a 101 key, so that part is very nice. The web cam works great. I used it on Skype the other night. I did upgrade the ram to 4 GB. Vista only sees 3.19 GB of it. Video eats some and the 32 bit OS will not recognize it all anyway. The only downfall is this: They don't include a hard copy of your software. Come on, how much money and trouble would it be to include a couple of CD's/DVD's to have a hard copy of your software? It does include an option for you to make them though. Definitely a good buy, especially at this price.

5 of 5 Refurb like new Tuesday, January 29, 2008
A Customer from EC, Maryland
I've been using HP/Compaq's for about 5 years now. When my 4 yr old R3000 died I decided to upgrade with this. Was hesitant about buying a refurb but I'm very happy with this one. Only a 90 day warranty but packaged like new. I've had it running near constantly for two weeks. Upgraded the secondary hard drive from 80 to 320gb. Opened the back to see all the parts. Configured Vista to work better for me. (I prefer classic menus and Sleep mode.) Only downside to this new HP model is the placement of the audio jacks. On the front panel is not convenient for use with desktop speakers. So I purchased a QuickDock and got extra ports. The laptop runs quiet and cool. Buy.com service is decent but lacked in communication. By the time I got the shipping notice the laptop was on my doorstep.

5 of 5 Great machine! Tuesday, January 29, 2008
A Customer from Katy, Texas
I haven't had a chance to check it out completely yet, but what I have seen is very impressive. The display is phenomenal..it's little wonder that it comes with it's own video remote control! I found that the "screen saver" and "sleep" function are disabled when my MS wireless mouse is used. I've yet to check out a new Logitech wireless desktop to see if I experience the same problem. But I would recommend this unit at this great price.

5 of 5 Great Value and Performance Monday, January 28, 2008

You can't find a better deal than this computer for everything you get. There is no obvious indication that it is recertified except for the labeling - it came out of the box exactly like new, and it hasn't had a hiccup yet.

4 of 5 Good value. Many nice features. A few drawbacks. Monday, January 28, 2008
A Customer from Colorado
Got this laptop for the many good features included at a very reasonable price: nice large screen (very clear and crisp display), good size 200GB HD, 2GB memory, built-in webcam, lightscribe DVD writer, quick play, full keyboard with number keypad. Some of the drawbacks: small right shift key, battery life is maybe around 2 hrs (not too bad, but was hoping for more), Vista (does have some nice features, but has long boot time and like previous versions not completely bug-free.) All things considered, the pros outweigh the cons on this laptop, especially for the price.

Jennifer from Alpharetta, GA
I've only had this items a couple of weeks, but so far so good. I know several others who are thinking of buying and I can't think of a reason why they shouldn't other than the customer service people with buy.com are not helpful at all. So if you are looking for information you need to do your own research.

5 of 5 Wonderful personal use laptop Monday, January 28, 2008
Kiel S from Minneapolis, MN
Some of the initial concerns I had upon purchasing were as follows: 1) Unfamiliarity with Vista outside of negative comments and critiques on various websites. 2) Lack of dedicated video support. 3) Size of laptop with number pad. But after using the laptop for a couple weeks I have completely reconsidered all of my initial reservations. Vista has worked flawlessly for me so far. Initially I struggled to get used to the menu layouts and option placements, but after a only a few days I quickly realized how much more intuitive some of the features are. Besides, one can always utilize the 'xp theme' if they wish for the classic interface. The Nvidia 7150m has performed better than originally anticipated. Granted I am not running current top of the line games, but it is more than sufficient to run the programs I use on a daily basis, and even tackle half-life 2 and other last-gen games with no issues. The only drawback is the need for HP required drivers which are few and far between in terms of updates. The laptop size has been easy to deal with. While I do not take it everywhere I go, I do bring it on consulting trips to use as a dvd player and work computer, and as such the number pad has been invaluable to me for data entry. Overall I have been very pleased with my purchase, and would recommend it for anyone looking for a balanced computer experience at an excellent price.

4 of 5 Excellent Features for the Price Monday, January 21, 2008
Brad W. from Storm Lake, IA
Upgraded from an old P4 Dell. The hardware feature list is great for the price. Some positives for me that stand out: 1) All connections are on the sides, none in back. No more tilting the computer forward to plug into a USB, etc, 2) HP Quick Play is nice for the kids to just watch a movie, 3) Having 4 USB jacks, 4) Having an external switch for the WiFi, 5) Having the built-in webcam is nice, and 6) The screen is very nice. The only knocks I have are: 1) Vista, and not being able to downgrade to XP, 2) The offset keyboard takes getting used to but I do like the having the number keypad, and 3) Not a gaming machine, though it does run older games (Battlefield 1942/Vietnam, Half-Life/Half-Life 2) and a few others I have just fine, actually better than my old laptop with a graphics card. The only thing I would change is that I'm replacing one of the 1GB RAMs with a 2GB. Comparing the features vs price with online computer vender's, this computer came out around $600 less, $200 less than the comparable model at Walmart. Excellent value.

4 of 5 Not bad, but... Thursday, January 17, 2008
A Customer from Framingham, MA
Delivery was excellent and you'd never know it was refurbished. Works okay for a PC, but its no Mac! Of course that's unfair- like comparing a Chevy to a Lexus, but as with the Chevy, the price was right ($700 vs. $2,800). Laptops don't really need the number keypad. Unfortunately, the designers of this model added it to the detriment of the laptop. The main keyboard and the trackpad are moved to the left of the center of the display, thus making it aggravating to use. Plus, the small right shift key is very irritating. I'd rather have a keyboard and trackpad centered, and add the number pad if needed. Also, the display resembles my old projection big screen TV- only clear from straight ahead. Any angle degrades it severely. My 3 year old Mac laptop is visible at almost any angle (Again, probably price difference).
