| Still coming off the success of her 2001 debut, The Spirit Room, Michelle Branch returns with what is sure to get the people at MTV to fall in love with her all over again. With Hotel Paper, her self-produced most recent release, we find Michelle beginning where she left off, just a bit older and wiser. "Boasts road-toughened guitars and a welcome accusatory edge." Having successfully managed the transition into her twenties, she sounds even more confident on the follow-up HOTEL PAPER. This is an album of panoramic pop; even though many of the songs here are based around simple guitar licks and sharp rhythms, most of them burst out into widescreen production by the time the chorus kicks in. "Are You Happy Now?" incorporates a percolating drum-and-bass feel (of the electronica variety) with anthemic rock guitar. Achieving a similar mix-and-match production effect, tricky acoustic guitar licks rub shoulders with snappy drum loops on "Love Me Like That," which features a guest appearance from Sheryl Crow. | | HOTEL PAPER is essentially a pop-rock album with some power-ballad tendencies. Nevertheless, the twangy, chugging "Breathe" is not the Faith Hill hit of the same name but could find its way onto a Hill or Shania album with no trouble at all, indicative of the inherent stylistic malleability of Branch's all-purpose songwriting. | Musical Guests | | Sheryl Crow |

| | Professional Reviews | | Spin (08/03, p.116) - "...[Sticks to her] folk-rock guns...[HOTEL PAPER] boasts road-toughened guitars and a welcome accusatory edge..." - Grade: BE! Online 8 of 10 With her breakthrough 2001 debut The Spirit Room and superstar turn with Santana on "The Game of Love," Michelle Branch is fast becoming the classic-rock crowd's new sweetheart. But Branch isn't ready to fall into that dusty groove just yet. Rather than turning out an album of safe, sterile songs designed specifically for the radio--okay, half the album is like that--she keeps us guessing by roping in Jane's Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro to add spiky riffs to her Alanis Morissette-channeling single "Are You Happy Now?" and lets out a walloping rocker in "Breathe." So, it's not exactly a musical revolution in the making, but it'll sure be easier to tell her apart from Vanessa Carlton from now on.
