When Michelle Branch emerged with her hit debut album in 2001 she was just 17 years old. Having successfully managed the transition into her twenties, she sounds even more confident on the follow-up HOTEL PAPER. This is an album of panoramic pop; even though many of the songs here are based around simple guitar licks and sharp rhythms, most of them burst out into widescreen production by the time the chorus kicks in. "Are You Happy Now?" incorporates a percolating drum-and-bass feel (of the electronica variety) with anthemic rock guitar. Achieving a similar mix-and-match production effect, tricky acoustic guitar licks rub shoulders with snappy drum loops on "Love Me Like That," which features a guest appearance from Sheryl Crow.
HOTEL PAPER is essentially a pop-rock album with some power-ballad tendencies. Nevertheless, the twangy, chugging "Breathe" is not the Faith Hill hit of the same name but could find its way onto a Hill or Shania album with no trouble at all, indicative of the inherent stylistic malleability of Branch's all-purpose songwriting.

With her breakthrough 2001 debut The Spirit Room and superstar turn with Santana on "The Game of Love," Michelle Branch is fast becoming the classic-rock crowd's new sweetheart. But Branch isn't ready to fall into that dusty groove just yet. Rather than turning out an album of safe, sterile songs designed specifically for the radio--okay, half the album is like that--she keeps us guessing by roping in Jane's Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro to add spiky riffs to her Alanis Morissette-channeling single "Are You Happy Now?" and lets out a walloping rocker in "Breathe." So, it's not exactly a musical revolution in the making, but it'll sure be easier to tell her apart from Vanessa Carlton from now on.

5 of 5 Follow up to her debute album Monday, March 29, 2004
russm83 from Clarks Summit, PA

If you enjoyed her first album, The Spirit Room, second album, Hotel Paper will be one of your favorites. Combine pop, rock, country and you get Michelle Branch. After being accepted in the pop category Michelle goes back to her rock roots to create an album that is more personal, more mature then her first album. Michelle has the ability to create a story with every song she writes and this album is no exception to her talent.

5 of 5 One word: AWESOME!!! Thursday, June 26, 2003
Michael from Los Angeles, California
I am a huge Michelle Branch fan! She is so talented and has a great voice. I recently purchased this album and have already listened to the whole thing, and let me tell you, it's AWESOME! Every single song is really good. Especially #3 "Find Your Way Back" and #7 with Sheryl Crow "Love Me Like That". This CD is a must buy for any music lover or any Michelle Branch fan. Believe me, if you liked "The Spirit Room", you'll like this one. You will not be disappointed. Though, "Hotel Paper" has a more of a rock sound than "The Spirit Room". So if you do not yet own this "AWESOME" CD, hurry up and buy it! What are you waiting for?

I've only heard 1 full-length song (ayhn) and 2 clips of other songs on the album. From that, I was convinced I'd like the album. ;)
