Living Era's continuing trawl through the popular hits of the '20s proceeded into 1923 with a subtitle ("Dreamy Melody") that doesn't really apply to many of the performances on tap. The Jazz Age was beginning to swing, and for every tender, disconsolate song such as Henry Burr's "Faded Love Letters," there were at least two from strident performers who were informed equally by Broadway and the blues -- Marion Harris ("Aggravatin' Papa"), Miss Patricola ("Lovin' Sam, the Sheik of Alabam'"), Sophie Tucker ("You've Got to See Mama Ev'ry Night"), or the immortal Al Jolson ("Toot, Toot, Tootsie, Goo'bye!"). Novelties were popular as well, with a pair of gigantic hits -- Billy Jones' "Yes, We Have No Bananas" and Eddie Cantor's "No, No, Nora" -- leading the way. Still, one of the most popular artists of the year remained unchanged from previous years; Paul Whiteman appears three times here. ~ John Bush
