As 2004 turned to 2005, reggaeton made a surging debut in America, as records from artists like Daddy Yankee climbed into the upper reaches of the pop charts. However, the Puerto Rican style--which embodies its geographic position, incorporating styles from the musical traditions of the United States, Mexico, Central and South America, and the Caribbean--had already been going strong for years before breaking out. HITMAKERS collects some of the heartiest specimens of the budding style from its formative years, 2000-2005. Born out of distinctive sounds with rich histories, including hip-hop, reggae, salsa, and merengue, reggaeton comes in many shades and varieties, and this two-disc compilation effectively captures its kaleidoscopic nature. The set opens on a fairly traditional reggae note with heavyweight Don Omar showing off the dancehall side of reggaeton on "Dile," while a few tracks later, Daddy Yankee, who has appeared on records with Nas, Terror Squad, and Lil Jon, displays the style's Latin-rap side on "Muevete Y Perrea." The collection boasts a remarkably good flow, ranging in tone from smooth to impassioned to highly energetic.
