Like the wicked Clowns the Kings are a white, hardcore rap duo with "parental advisory" lyrics with a sound that's almost identical. Instead of Faygo and the dark carnival, Kottonmouth Kings bust rhymes about smoking weed. While not really having much to say other than lobbying for the legalization of cannabis, the album does have entertaining moments, especially on the tracks "We the People" and "Wickit Klowns" a collaboration with (you guessed it) ICP. This album will no doubt have a strong appeal among teenage males looking to drive their parents crazy. Adults disturbed by the content should listen to the CD closely because beneath the hardcore rap exterior the songs often act as tributes to wholesome drug anthems of the past. The words "legalize it" made famous by reggae great Peter Tosh grace the album cover, and at one point the two bust into a near endless repetition of the Grateful Dead's immortal refrain "What a long strange trip its been." ~ Curtis Zimmermann | | The third album from those crazy cats from Orange County, California, HIGH SOCIETY is packed with hip-hop and punk rock. The Kottonmouth Kings have improved both their songwriting and song production, and solid tracks like "The Joint," "First Class," and "Here We Go Again" repeatedly display their tour-honed craft. | | Though HIGH SOCIETY contains a widely diverse mix of styles and influences, hip-hop is the constant theme. The listener is kept on a on a wild sonic ride, with cuts such as the reggae-flavored "Face Facts," the West Coast hip-hop funk of "The Lottery," and the electronica-vibed "Daydreamin' Fazes." With the added bonus of an Insane Clown Posse guest appearance on "Wicket Klowns," HIGH SOCIETY is an impressive mix of contemporary elements and smoked-out sounds. | Engineer: Phil Kaffel | Musical Guests | | Insane Clown Posse | | Grand Vanacular | | Corporate Avenger | | Sen Dog | | Dog Boy | | Jack Grisham |

| | Professional Reviews | | Rolling Stone (6/22/00, pp.128-30) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...Embodies nearly every hip-hop honky cliche....the grooving metallic production, which is both bugged out and appealingly populist...makes this a guilty pleasure....In the white-boy, skate-rap, nut-grabbin' crunk-punk-funk arena, these Kings rule."CMJ (7/00, p.54) - "...A solid improvement...showcasing proficient production and beats by DJ Bobby B, some cleverly blunted verbiage by Saint Vicious and D-Loc and strong party-for-your-right-to-fight antics..." |
