Since the late 1960s, he's been committing his deep, swamp-soaked voice and cutting, bluesy guitar to record. Though his latter-day recording career proved to be inconsistent, White never lost the gritty, soulful essence of what made his music great. | | Accordingly, THE HEROINES is one of the best of his later releases. The titular concept finds him singing a number of duets with female country artists (Shelby Lynne, Lucinda Williams, Emmylou Harris, and others). But somehow, White neatly avoids the incongruous, slapped-together feel that dominates most duet albums, establishing an agreeably greasy musical through-line in which one can hear a direct connection to his early classics. The production is appropriately stripped-down, and the feel insistent. One never gets the swamp-rock-by-numbers feeling that marred some of his preceding recordings; instead, THE HEROINES proved that White was still capable of showing off his status as a true American original. | Producer: Tony Joe White; J.D.
