Editor's Note

Robert De Niro and Al Pacino are finally together on screen in this riveting story about an intense rivalry between expert thief Neil McCauley (De Niro) and volatile cop Vincent Hanna (Pacino). McCauley will stop at nothing to do what he does best and neither will Hanna, even though it means destroying everything around them, including the people they love. With a solid supporting cast that includes Val Kilmer, Jon Voight, Ashley Judd, and Natalie Portman, HEAT is a truly epic crime story.

Plot Summary

"Never have anything in your life you can't walk out on in thirty seconds" is the motto of expert thief Neil McCauley (De Niro). After his next break-in, McCauley plans to retire from his outlaw life and move to New Zealand. However, Vincent Hanna (Pacino), a Los Angeles police detective, obsessively tracks McCauley's gang of thieves, who have left three security guards dead in an armored truck robbery. As the detective gets closer to tracking them down, the crooks plan another big heist, this time at a bank. Hanna soon gets a lead that helps him determine the identity of the criminal mastermind who engineered the thefts, and discovers McCauley is a man as driven and relentless as the detective himself.

Although he doesn't have enough evidence against the thief to make an arrest, Hanna convinces McCauley to join him for coffee, at which point the two engage in casual conversation and discover that their lives are remarkably similar. However, each man makes it clear he'll kill the other if necessary. Though they know the police are closing in on them, McCauley and his men risk going through with the bank job. A violent shoot-out and car chase result, but the criminals escape. Hanna continues to pursue them unceasingly, at the expense of his already-crumbling marriage. Eventually Hanna and McCauley face each other for the last time in a thrilling showdown at the Los Angeles airport.

With HEAT, director Michael Mann achieves the nearly impossible task of making three hours go by in a flash with his use of the hand-held camera for action scenes and a moody score that echoes the characters' emotions. Val Kilmer, Ashley Judd, and others play characters that are also crucial to the plot, but never distract from the central conflict between McCauley and Hanna. The acting is outstanding, the story is riveting and the action scenes are breathtaking. Both De Niro and Pacino are perfect as two men driven to sacrifice nearly everything for their respective professions. With edge-of-your-seat action and insightful drama, HEAT is a crime film at its most intense and personal.

Time Magazine 0 of 10
Dispassion vs. passion, intellect vs. instinct, the implosive vs. the explosive style--as writer-director Michael Mann develops the duel between the cop and robber in Heat, his film becomes a compassionate contemplation of the two most basic ways of being male and workaholic in modern America. It also becomes a critique of pure reason... All [the inner turmoil in his characters] adds good weight and tension to the movie and provides a lot of very good actors with the opportunity to do honest, probing work in a context where, typically, less will do. But Mann's aspirations don't stop there. Having revived the historical saga in The Last of the Mohicans, he obviously wants to do the same thing for what has become a much more familiar (and tiresome) genre, the urban action picture. This Mann achieves with truly epic sweep, maniacal conviction and awesome technical proficiency. He announces his intentions in an opening sequence that may be the best armored-car robbery ever placed on film. He proceeds to a crazily orchestrated bank heist that goes awry and finishes in a wild firefight on a crowded downtown street that is a masterpiece of sustained invention. He ends with a chase that takes Pacino and De Niro into wholly original realms of hellishness, the back end of an airport, where their passions are nearly drowned out by the thunderous comings and goings of heedless flight... - Richard Schickel

Austin Chronicle 0 of 10
...Director Mann (Thief, Manhunter, The Last of the Mohicans) remakes his 1989 TV movie L.A. Takedown by bringing two acting titans together in one of the most intelligent crime-thrillers to come along in years. Pacino plays LAPD Detective Vincent Hanna on the trail of career criminal Neil McCauly (De Niro) and his crew of high-stakes thieves. Once Hanna and his team of detectives sniff out McCauly's trail after a botched armed robbery hit, Heat becomes a mesmerizing and relentless cat-and-mouse game where the bad guys are always one step ahead. What's so effective is the intriguing character examination we find at the heart of the film... Although the two share little screen time together, Pacino and De Niro's scenes are poignant and gripping. Some might have expected the two to collide like forces of nature, but in a high noon scene that should go down in cinematic history, the two merely talk life and realize they are essentially the same... Hanna and McCauly eventually meet again in one of the greatest bank robbery/shoot-out scenes ever that is beautifully chaotic and masterfully edited (last January's Bank of America shoot-out in L.A. was an eerie reenactment). With a stellar cast including Val Kilmer and Jon Voight, Heat has it all including a great soundtrack full of tone-setting, ambient, and symphonic arrangements. - Simon Cole

5 of 5 BEST BANK ROBBERY SCENE EVER!!!! Tuesday, February 12, 2002
Chris from Rockaway, NY
This movie has some of the best action scenes in a long time, both technically proficient and theatrically captivating. This movie is like a instruction manual for bank robbers! (just kidding) I watch this movie CONSTANTLY,and it never gets old. the performances by Deniro and Pacino are riveting and very intense, and Val Kilmer as Chris is very human, in that you can see how he feels as he emotes in every scene, making you understand his actions.

Jason from San Francisco
This is one of the best movies ever made IMHO. I love the character development and action scenes have you riveted to your seat. You find yourself rooting for both the good guys (Pacino) and the bad guys (Kilmer, DeNiro) in this movie. I don't know how else to describe it, other than saying if you buy it I'm sure you will like it.

5 of 5 Captivating... Tuesday, November 20, 2001
Gil from Irvine, CA
As you may already know, the performances by Pacino and De Niro clearly set this movie apart from others. In addition to wonderful character development (primarily of the protagonist and antagonist), the visual effects, cinematography, and soundtrack invoke viewer self-involvement. This is one movie you'll never get bored of.

Frank Pierce from Tempe, AZ
This movie captures DeNiro, Pacino, and Kilmer at their best. The acting in this movie is sensational. This film is also ideal for home theater enthusiasts. Everytime I have people over at the house I crank up the surround sound and put on the shoot out scene. It blows them away! Not a lot of A+ moviews like this out these days. Definitely worth having in the DVD collection.

I like the kind of movies that take you for a ride and this is a good one. One of the most authentic action-escape scenes captured on film. From begining to end over two hours of non-stop action and plot development to entertain. I enjoyed this movie very much.

5 of 5 BEST MOVIE EVER!!! Tuesday, December 21, 1999
Logos from Miami, FL
Anyone that said that the movie has no plot must have fallen asleep during the first hour of it. You should have realized that it was a great film with a very intelligent plot. The action was great, but it pales in comparison to the incredible cinematography and overall plot. The chemistry between Pacino and DeNiro was very well portrayed, and the coffee meeting between them was beyond brilliant. Due to the depth of their characters, we see how both men are not your common stereotypical cop and robber. The movie shows how complicated life is, and that everything is not black and white.

4 of 5 IF YOU WANT REALISM, WHY ARE YOU WATCHING MOVIES?? Friday, September 17, 1999
UPSET from the lack of INTELLIGENT reviewers...
I cannot believe how many people put down the lack of REALISM in movies. If you want REALISM, go out there and find it! We go to movies to be BLOWN AWAY or 'distracted' from life for a few hours. Now, if Pacino and De Niro started FLYING, I would agree that the director was on SHROOMS, but if you want an action movie that will keep you (most of the time) on the edge of your seat (I'll admit there are parts where if you've already seen it, you might doze off), then Heat is a DEFINITE rental...don't buy it if you haven't seen it.

5 of 5 Awesome Action Monday, August 23, 1999
Alberto from Miami, Florida
This is a fantastic action film starring two of the best actors in Hollywood. It is quite violent and graphic, but that is what creates such intensity. I remember being on the edge of my seat in the theatre during the entire bank robbery scene. Similar in plot to another Michael Mann movie - Thief.

This has to be one of my all time favorite movies. DeNiro delivers his typical bad guy attitude in an explosive action packed movie. Pacino proves he can play the opposite role, good guy, and make it look good. Enjoy this movie!

1 of 5 UGH! Are you kidding? Tuesday, August 03, 1999
A Viewer from dallas, tx
This was one of the worst films I have ever seen. From the opening scene where blown up, out-gunned security guards decide to fight back (yeah, right) all the way to the end where the two superstars are chasing each other (completely unrealistic-there were about 20 chances where DeNiro could have easily ambushed Pacino if he had any brain whatsoever), this movie fell apart at the seams. Sure, starstruck loser movie patrons can be expected to accept just about anything, but couldn't the director just watch this thing once with a critical eye for realism?

Clayton Smith from Mill Valley, CA
From the first moment you enter the plot until the final scene at LAX, it is one intense ride. No one yet mentioned the sound effects at LAX during the conclusion. If you have a quality 6 speaker, Dolby Digital system, you will swear that the planes are landing in your living room. The shoot out in downtowm LA is so vivid and adrenal pumping, what can I say. If you watch it once, you'll watch it 20 times.

Classic tale of good guys and bad guys set on the modern cityscape of Los Angeles. All performances in this film were astonishing. Pacino, DeNiro, Kilmer, Sizemore, Judd, even Henry Rollins. Big league crime story with one of the best shootouts (with the best sound f/x in recent years)to grace the scene. No doubt if you're a DeNiro/Pacino (or both) fan, you should own this and abuse this with multiple viewings.
