Editor's Note
One of TV's longest-running crime dramas (only LAW & ORDER would surpass its record-setting 12-year run), the 1970s television series HAWAII FIVE-O captivated audiences with its smart and stylish take on the standard policier formula. Filmed entirely on the Hawaiian archipelago, the action-packed series followed the crime-fighting adventures of an elite state-police squad anchored by quintessential tough guy Steve McGarrett (Jack Lord) and his detective team of Danny "Danno" Williams (James MacArthur), Chin Ho Kelly (Kam Fong), and Kono Kalakaua (Zulu). Almost singlehandedly rewriting the book on police dramas, the series distinguished itself with intricate plotting, inventive cinematography, exotically beautiful locations, and, of course, an indelible theme song and timeless catchphrase ("book 'em, Danno!"). This collection presents the iconic series' second season in its entirety.

Ultimate DVD
4 stars out of 5 -- "The plots are bolder in this season...The locations are still exotic, the production values high and the whole product stylish." 10/01/2007 p.117

Boston Phoenix 10 of 10
Steve McGarrett, as played by auteur and control freak Jack Lord, embodied the contradictions of law enforcement in what mainlanders saw as an "anything goes" paradise. The emotive twin of Dragnet's stolid Joe Friday ("That's what these kids get for trying drugs"), McGarrett combined Clint Eastwood's edginess with a West Coast sensibility: Dirty Harry goes surfing. Viewers were even treated to tantalizing glimpses of his personal life -- McGarrett was "a bachelor who enjoyed sailing" -- as our man in the lei worked over various island ne'er-do-wells...Hawaii Five-O was the last TV show I watched regularly. After McGarrett sailed off into the sunset in 1980, why bother? - Leighton Klein
