"The two men appeared out of nowhere, a few yards apart in the narrow, moonlit lane. For a second they stood quite still, wands directed at each other's chests; then, recognizing each other, they stowed their wands beneath their cloaks and started walking briskly in the same direction..." (from the first line)

It all comes down to this - a final faceoff between good and evil. You plan to pull out all the stops, but every time you solve one mystery, three more evolve. Do you stay the course you started, despite your lack of progress? Do you detour and follow a new lead that may not help? Do youlisten to your instincts, or your friends?

Lord Voldemort is preparing for battle and so must Harry. With Ron and Hermione at his side, he's trying to hunt down Voldemort's Horcruxes, escape danger at every turn, and find a way to defeat evil once and for all. How does it all end?

Annotation:
Ten years after Potter-mania first swept the globe, the epic series draws to a close with HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS, the hotly anticipated seventh and final book of the internationally revered Harry Potter series. Prophecies will be fulfilled. Beloved characters will die. Questions will be answered. (Is Dumbledore really gone forever? Who is R.A.B.? Is Severus Snape truly a villain?) In this final volume, Harry's seemingly impossible quest is to discover the locations of the remaining horcruxes--items sacred to Lord Voldemort containing shreds of his soul, making him immortal--and destroy them, saving the world from becoming a Death Eaters' paradise where Muggles are prey and purebloods rule. Accompanied by Ron and Hermione, Harry embarks on a dangerous, confusing, and often frustrating journey to discover the horcruxes. The trio is repeatedly in dire straits, making their mission seem, at times, doomed.||Throughout the series, author J. K. Rowling has been steadily escalating events towards the climactic battle between Harry and the Dark Lord, and numerous seemingly trivial details from the previous novels play important roles--proof of Rowling's masterly control of the sprawling and multi-layered "wizarding world" she has invented. By far the darkest of the novels, this impressive finale shows Harry bereft of his godfather, Sirius Black, the wise and secretive Dumbledore, and even his friends: he is forced to truly grow up and face a fight where he is the sole lynchpin in the battle between righteousness and a nearly omnipotent evil. With modern problems re-imagined in a magical setting, echoes of Christianity, and an unwavering faith in goodness, Rowling's epic saga will remain a children's classic for generations to come. A 2007 New York Times Notable Book and a nominee for the 2008 Nebula Prize.

Deathly Hallows is dark and bloody, but then again what do you expect with Voldermort kicking around? One thing that strikes one throughout the book is that it is rather visual, almost cinematic. The book was clearly written in a manner that would not make it too terribly hard to turn into a script....read the full review

So it has come to this. After ten years and seven novels the magical saga of Harry Potter has finally reached its conclusion. The countdowns are over, the hype begins to subside, and the biggest question surrounding J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (besides whether Severus Snape is indeed friend or foe) can be answered - was it a worthwhile journey?...read the full review

Praise
"It is Ms. Rowling's achievement in this series that she manages to make Harry both a familiar adolescent--coping with the banal frustrations of school and dating--and an epic hero, kin to everyone from the young King Arthur to Spider-Man and Luke Skywalker." - Michiko Kakutani 07/19/2007

"Harry and Rowling rally their troops so successfully, it's almost painful to be stuck on the sidelines. As always, Rowling's greatest strength is the ability to whisk readers away to a fully imagined world...For one last time, fans will be longing to grab a wand, hop on their broom, and join the fray." - Yvonne Zipp 7/23/07

"Rowling has woven together clues, hints and characters from previous books into a prodigiously rewarding, suspenseful conclusion in which all the important questions, including the true nature of Severus Snape, the fates of Crabbe and Goyle, and the presence of the dark wizard Grindelwald on a Chocolate Frog card in book one, are punctiliously resolved." - Catherine Bennett 7/28/07

"At times...the story resembles the worst camping-out experience you have ever had; at others, it recalls a dungeons-and-dragons-type electronic game." - Alison Lurie 9/27/2007

"Rowling fulfills the promise of earlier volumes, tying up loose threads, deepening character complexities to match Harry's evolving recognition of life's shades of gray, pulling out every emotional stop, and leading her hero into adulthood while still producing the most focused plot line and layered, heart-in-throat climax of the series." 9/1/2007

"As with the previous books, infelicitous stylistic choices and overlong expository passages are forgiven in favor of meticulous plotting and flawless characterization; one need only picture McGonagall leading an army of animated school desks into battle to know that Rowling understands her characters deeply and perfectly." 10/1/2007

Author Bio
J. K. Rowling
One night, as a young J. K. (Joanne Kathleen) Rowling traveled from Manchester to London by train, an idea for a book about a boy wizard named Harry Potter formed in her mind. It would change the course of her life forever. As a young girl growing up in Chepstow, Gwent, a historic town near the Lower Wye Valley in Southern England, Rowling loved to tell stories, and started to write them down when she was 6-years-old. Throughout her schooling, she entertained her friends during lunchtime with fantastic made-up stories. After studying French at the University of Exeter, Rowling went on to work in London, until at age 26, she moved to Portugal to teach English as a second language. There, she married, became pregnant, and worked on her Harry Potter manuscript whenever she had a spare second. The death of her own mother made his orphaned state much more real to her. Rowling's marriage ended in divorce, and she moved to Edinburgh with her newborn daughter, Jessica. ||After five years of writing, and a year's worth of publisher rejections, HARRY POTTER AND THE PHILOSOPHER'S STONE was bought by Bloomsbury (U.K.) and published in June 1997. Shortly after Bloomsbury bought the manuscript, the rights were sold in America, where it was published in September 1998 as HARRY POTTER AND THE SORCERER'S STONE. Her book not only received lavish praise, winning the British Book Awards Children's Book of the Year and the Smarties Prize, but earned Rowling enough money to quit teaching and write full time. Her six subsequent Harry Potter books, all spectacular bestsellers, have continued to receive British and American awards, and are all being made into films. Having reached her lifelong dream of becoming a professional writer, Rowling encourages children who want to write to read as much as they can.

4 of 5 Rowling Disappoints Wednesday, October 17, 2007
Topbookreviews from Mid-West

At the very least, she disappointed me with the last book of her epic fantasy. At the very beginning I was vexed: all the mystique and terror you used to associate with the dark lord has been erased as Voldemort sits in on a boardroom meeting with his associates. After chapters of unremarkable adventure, the book draws to an equally disappointing conclusion. The finale sets You-Know-Who standing pathetically alone against onslaughts of students, teachers, and murderous elves with knives. The image is halerious, and made me almost feel sorry for the archnemisis of the wizarding world. Not too much, though, because Voldemort landed himself into this mess through a series of amateurish mistakes. In general, the dark lord has the strategic mind of a 8 year old. The only reason this book gets a four is from the enormous buildup it follows from the previous six. As a stand alone, it's probably a two. Also, if you missed reading Tino Georgiou's masterpiece--The Fates, go and read it. While I'm near the end, I'm reading it at a rapid pace because it's so addictive. There is something about his books that bring you in and get you hooked. I'm loving this one and with only 40 pages to go until the end

As usual this book carries on the legacy of Harry Potter. With twists and turns, it keeps you hanging to find out whether Harry will live through his inevitable encounter with ..."You know who". You must read it, even if you have not read any of the others in the series!

A Reader from Montville, NJ
JK Rowling has out done herself again. The long anticipated conclusion to the Harry Potter series was more than I expected. The story remains fast paced with several surprise twists. After every chapter, you are compelled to read another. This is a must read. I highly recommend to all Potter and fantasy fans.
