I've purchased 3-4 remotes over the years and had to work around problems with all of them (including one I gave up on altogether). The Harmony series is the one to buy. The price is reasonable and performance is excellent. It took maybe 40 minutes to set up and then tweak (changing button labels, rearranging buttons, etc.). I even had to set it up so my cable box never got shut off (Harmony wants to turn everything off when you power off). It was simple to go to the cable box setup on my PC and select the option to never shut off. It also passed the spouse test. My wife figured it out with no help from me, something she hadn't mastered since we've owned home theater equipment.
One final note, if you are not comfortable with PCs and these sorts of configuration tasks, I would still buy the Harmony but ask an adept relative or neighbor to help. If you are no good at this sort of thing I don't think you'll master it alone. You also need to know which inputs you use for various tasks (TV vs. DVD, for example).
