Berry was arguably the first great rock & roll singer-songwriter, combining chugging R&B rhythms with country and blues licks, over which he laid some sophisticated, literate verbiage. Diddley, whose mother knew him as Elias McDaniel, created the shave-and-a-haircut-two-bits beat that emphasized rock & roll's African roots. This compilation, reaching as it does into the Chess Records catalogues of both Berry and Diddley, offers some of their best material. Not necessarily a greatest hits package, GUITAR LEGENDS features the less-overexposed end of both men's music, as on cuts like Diddley's "You Can't Judge a Book By It's Cover" and Berry's infamous, suggestive "My Ding-A-Ling." |
