3 of 5 Fun, but falls short of expectations Tuesday, August 14, 2007 Tony G from South Bend, IN
The best thing I can say about this game is that the songs are very fun to play. However, there are not enough of them, literally less than half of the number in Guitar Hero 2 (30 compared to ~65.) I care more about playing the game than the extras, so it didn't bother me that there were fewer characters, and all the same guitars and venues from GH2.
The difficulty level was slightly disappointing too. This is definitely easier than GH2 (I've only played at expert level.) I beat 27 of the 30 songs on my first try and got 5 stars on over half of them. That doesn't leave much for the experienced players to work for.
Overall it's a fun game, and I'm glad I have it, but since it is basically a Guitar Hero 2 expansion, and not a full game, it probably should have cost about 35 dollars. Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 Ehhh...Should've been better! Friday, August 10, 2007 DrWoody from Placentia CA
If you've read any other reviews of this, most people are saying the same thing, that it seems like a rushed attempt to cash in on the GH franchise one last time. While I can't neccessarily disagree with these points, come on...its still Guitar Hero.
Yeah, having less characters and rehashing the same venues as GH2 is pretty weak for the die-hards. Yeah most of the alterations in color & graphics on the venues went unnoticed with our group. Yah, there are no extra songs. But truth be told, once the first chords or "Nothing But A Good Time" were strummed, nobody really cared about the aforementioned "flaws."
Regarding the track listing, I would have to say its just so-so. Some songs severely suffer from not having the original song, more so than on previous GH installments, as they lack excitement or energy. However, belting out "Turning Japanese", "Hold On Loosely", and "The Warrior" is almost guaranteed to get your crowd singing & pumping their fists. An entire 80s version of GH certainly seemed like a great concept, unfortunately though, this one doesnt quite live up to the expectations that GH & GH2 set up.

4 of 5 Wringing the last profits from GH2 Tuesday, July 31, 2007 CheezHead from Eau Claire, Wisconsin
It's not that I don't like this game, I mean come on... It's Guitar Hero. But I was very disappointed with the obvious attempt to get more profits from a game that ends up being a stripped down GH2 with 30 different songs.
They couldn't (or didn't care to) come up with anything more original than changing the guitar players' outfits and the background colors of the venues. No bonus videos (though the instructions mention buying them), fewer characters, no bonus songs and the same old everything else. Then as an added insult, they sell it for a higher price than GH2.
Knowing that Red Octane will not be involved with GH3, it really shouldn't be a shock that this version has nothing new. They even used more master tapes so they spent less on studio musicians to recreate songs. This produces a noticable difference in audio quality from one song to the next.
With all that said, if you are a GH junkie like me (played through medium and hard in 6 hours), then you have no choice but get this. Don't get it if you don't really like the song selection as there's nothing else there for your money. Was this review helpful?
