The Guitar Hero franchise took a big leap last year with World Tour, incorporating vocals and drums and making a bid for Rock Band's multiplayer music game crown. While World Tour was a great debut, Guitar Hero 5 is a more refined, more accessible game that better fulfills the promise of a full band experience with the Guitar Hero name. A number of enhancements make the game more enjoyable across the board, and the new Party Play mode sets the standard for relaxed, social gameplay in the genre. The freestyle jam mode provides a fun creative outlet, and folks interested in recording their creations will have a much easier time thanks to the significantly improved music studio interface. While none of Guitar Hero 5's improvements are groundbreaking, they all contribute to this very entertaining, very well put-together package that is sure to please both aspiring and established Guitar Heroes...There's an extensive set list on the disc, and players can once again download user-created tunes as well as official downloadable content tracks. However, if you're looking to import songs from your copy of Guitar Hero World Tour, you're in for some disappointment. After entering the 20-digit Unique Owner ID from the back of your World Tour manual, you have to pay $3.49 to download digital copies of the World Tour songs to your hard drive. Worse, you get only 35 of the 80-plus tracks from World Tour. Though the 35 tracks have been updated to include stuff like band moments (a bonus for playing in unison) and expert plus drumming (with adaptor-enabled double foot pedal action), it's disappointing that a higher percentage of tracks aren't available...There are a number of other sundry tweaks in Guitar Hero 5, but the core gameplay remains largely the same as World Tour. The new Rockfest multiplayer mode eschews item-based battles for more natural challenges, like nailing the longest streak of notes. Oddly, vocal star power can no longer be activated by tapping the mic, so singers have to keep a controller on hand if they want to use star power. Other than this change, and the disappointing song import options, Guitar Hero 5 improves upon its predecessor in almost every category. It's an easy buy for folks who bought World Tour, and it is a great option for those looking to see what this plastic video game rock craze is all about. It won't blow the roof off, but Guitar Hero 5 will definitely get your party rockin'. - Chris Watters

Activision and Neversoft have been running the Guitar Hero show for some time now. The group took hold of the franchise with Guitar Hero 3, expanded the game series to a full band with Guitar Hero World Tour and offered up a handful of spin-offs along the way. With that much experience, you'd think the mega-publisher would learn how to put together a winning product. And you'd be right. Guitar Hero 5 is the best addition to the franchise in a long time...It shouldn't come as any surprise that Guitar Hero 5 doesn't stray much from the same tried-and-true gameplay formula that has been the focus of over a dozen games in the past few years alone. The notes still come scrolling down the screen and the would-be rock stars around the world sill click those plastic guitars, bang the drums, and do their best to stay on key and in rhythm. Guitar, bass, drums and vocals are the four parts that make up the band. So what makes this one different from the other handful of Guitar Hero games that have come out over the last year? Quite a bit actually...There have been a lot of Guitar Hero games over the past few years. And there will be more yet before this year comes to a close. It's easy to get lost in the flood. But if you're going to grab one, Guitar Hero 5 is a good choice. The accessibility, streamlined presentation, solid note charts, and welcome gameplay improvements make this the best Guitar Hero game in recent memory. - Erik Brudvig

Guitar Hero continues its evolution of the music game that started it all. Even though the formula is pretty much the same, Guitar Hero 5 has just enough mojo to keep you coming back for more. Picking up from the pieces of World Tour, Guitar Hero 5 takes on more step towards creating the definitive music game...The Guitar Hero franchise has done a great job keeping our fingers busy with a steady output of add-on's games for the rhythm based original. If you haven't had enough guitar-busting rock n' roll action from the numerous releases like Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, Metallica and Smash Hits, then Neversoft's next evolution in the series should peak your interest. Building off of the foundation of World Tour, Guitar Hero 5 is more refined then ever. Just as you thought the power was going out in this tried and true formula, Neversoft and Activision have thrown in another generator to pump the franchise up to the next level...Guitar Hero 5 is the most refined version of an instrument based music game you can find. From the hardcore Guitar Hero fanatics to the casual gamer, Guitar Hero 5 has more features built into its gameplay to suit everyone. The engine has been upgraded to ensure gameplay is number one while a huge track list, new modes, updated graphics and featured rock stars come in second. All around Guitar Hero 5 is a major improvement over World Tour making this a definite buy.

When Rock Band 2 came out, with its ability to import almost every song from the original Rock Band and its unswervingly regular DLC, I didn't think I'd ever have a reason to go back to Guitar Hero. But Guitar Hero 5's dedication to getting players of every skill level jamming together and a renewed emphasis on compatible DLC has me rethinking my Rock Band exclusivity...Part of what makes Guitar Hero 5 so approachable are new features that should be standard in every multiplayer music game. From the moment you put the disc in your system, you can access every song in Quickplay -- no special codes or hours spent unlocking required. The game's Career mode lets you switch instruments or difficulties any time you want (unlike World Tour, which forced you to start from the beginning if you wanted to play through with a new instrument). And within a band, you can even put multiple players on the same instrument. If you think the bass part for a song is boring, you can have two (or three or four) players on guitar...The only area where Guitar Hero 5 fails to shine is the singing. Finding your pitch using the game's too-small indicator makes it hard to know when you're off key. Or, if you have multiple vocalists on the same song, you can't trade off parts; you're either all singing the same parts at the same time, or you're failing. It doesn't help that Guitar Hero 5's setlist doesn't lend itself to singing; but then, the game is called Guitar Hero...It's worth mentioning that Neversoft gave the music creator a facelift; the system's easier to navigate than it was in World Tour. Though I couldn't find an in-game tutorial that explained... anything, I was able to put together a rudimentary song without too much hassle. But, like in World Tour, I don't think it's a system with broad appeal, especially when the licensed DLC is so much more enticing...If you're one of the Guitar Hero faithful who never got sucked in to Rock Band, then Guitar Hero 5 is the best iteration of the game to date. This is the game that can actually bring both hardcore and casual rockers together for a good time. The multiplayer is easier to jump into than Rock Band, but the game's more intense difficulty settings still provide a challenge for the plastic-instrument elitist.
