4 of 5 Works fine Tuesday, December 30, 2008 A Customer from Philadelphia, PA
I would love a direct connection to my stereo, but it's not worth the investment in my truck for a new stereo. So, I chose an FM transmitter option. After reading soooo many reviews, I chose this one because I like the option of being able to control the playback and because of the ability to use the 87.9 channel. Unfortunately, Griffin appears to have removed that functionality. I have tried to do the tricks to unlock it, but it seems they updated the firmware and that is no longer an option. On the upside, it still works pretty well. The channel scan function is worthless, but if you manually find an unused channel, it works very well (and I live in Philadelphia with a ton of stations around). I would prefer not to go searching for a channel, but if I stay in the city, I don't really have to make any adjustments. So, all in all, a good transmitter and I would choose it again. 1 of 5 No longer has "international mode" Tuesday, December 09, 2008 Keith from Baltimore, MD
You have seen many other reviews here from past months where the Griffin iTrip AutoPilot FM transmitter (product 4046-TRPAUTOC) has been able to be "tricked" into broadcasting frequencies below 88.1 (the "international mode"). However, I just bought my Griffin iTrip AutoPilot last week and this function has been removed from items sold within the US. I was confused about this, so I contacted Griffin customer service and they confirmed this. Therefore, if you plan to buy this product to use within international mode, DO NOT - GRIFFIN HAS DISABLED THIS FUNCTION. Without this function, as mine is, it is nonfunctional and unusable. If you still want to get this product, see if you can buy one used on the Amazon Marketplace or Ebay. This product gets one star for its recharging capabilities. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 works great for me in big city Saturday, August 23, 2008 Dave from San Francisco, CA
I am using the iTrip AutoPilot in San Francisco with my iPhone 3G in a 2005 Honda Accord. I had very low expectations, based in my experience with other FM transmitters in the city. But the iTrip works great!
I followed the instructions found in reviews on Apple's online store and elsewhere, to enable the hidden "international mode". This allowed me to transmit on 87.9 which is completely clear.
But even on the US frequencies it is working well for me. Was this review helpful?
1 of 1 customers found this review helpful. 2 of 5 Basic functionality does not work Friday, June 13, 2008 SteveEisner from Minneapolis, MN
I've been waiting for an iPhone-compatible FM transmitter for quite a while, so I bought this as soon as it was available. Unfortunately, the unit has let me down.
Although the unit is slickly designed and overall easy to use, it simply does not work as an FM transmitter. It cannot overpower even the weakest stations in my area, and I've found that I spend more time trying to recalibrate it than actually listening to music. It's extremely sensitive to positioning of the wire that connects the plug and the iPhone.
Other functionality is similarly broken. The "SmartScan" auto-tuning gives essentially random results, often suggesting frequencies occupied by high-power stations. Even while I'm parked, it will suggest different channels each time. And it can't tune below 88.1, so I can't use the quiet 87.7 or 87.9 frequencies that are available on my radio.
When it works, it's nice. If the tuner worked consistently, this would be a great device. But it's inexcusable to package all this advanced functionality with a crippled tuner. I will be returning it. Was this review helpful?
