5 of 5 Great product, Great buy. Tuesday, July 17, 2007 Rick from Toano, Va.
These earbuds pack a punch for the price. I'm a landscaper and I mostly use my MP3 player when I'm cutting grass. With this style of ear phones I don't have to turn the volume up as loud to hear the music. They do a good job of blocking outside noise. And the clarity is great! The bass and treble sound great also. I would buy another pair of these if I had to. Was this review helpful?

The EarThumps are a definite step up from the stock iPod headphones, but don't expect to be blown away.

These buds have quite good passive attenuation. The in-ear design muffles ambient noise, but lets enough through to keep me from feeling totally cut off from my surroundings. The roar of the bus becomes a murmur, and all but the loudest of conversations around me disappears. Sitting in a quiet library, I can hear my own typing, but only faintly.

The soft rubber bungs are quite comfortable once you get them firmly seated in your ear. This won't appeal to everyone, but they need to be jammed rather forcefully, fairly deep into the ear; this feels uncomfortable at first, but they quickly settle in, and aside from the reduction of ambient sound, I almost don't notice them. Anyone with inner ear problems will want to steer clear of these, however, as they would quickly get annoying for those whose ears frequntly "pop" or otherwise adjust to pressure.

Sound quality: frankly, a bit lack-luster on the first listen. The bass is not significantly stronger than the stock earbuds; however, it is substantially tighter and more defined. This comes at a cost: mids are muddy, and treble is very weak. Where the stock iPod earbuds need plenty of bass dialed in via the Rock or Bass Booster EQ settings, the EarThumps require a hefty boost of treble (I settled on Treble Booster) to sound balanced. Even so, the midrange still feels thin and a bit ill-defined, and the bass, while sharp and tight, still lacks punch -- don't expect the viscereal "kick" larger "over-ear" cans deliver.

These shortcomings aside, the EarThumps' sound is excellent for its price, and with a little tweaking, a definite improvement over the 'buds that ship with the iPod. Improved bass, in addition to noise isolation, make them well worth it. The second thing I did (after boosting treble) was to dial back my iPod's volume limiter by a full third -- with all that background noise reduced, the EarThumps are significantly louder than the iPod earbuds. In a quiet room, just a slight nudge from zero provides ample volume to reveal the detail in classical music, while on a noisey bus, less than a quarter of the iPod full output does justice to most rock or electronic music.

Save your hearing, reduce the stress of ambient noise, and improve your iPod's sound -- give these a try. Was this review helpful?
