| | Album Notes and Credits | Notes & Personnel Info | | This release includes a bonus DVD featuring the short film SIGHTINGS OF BONO. | | Released in 2004 to coincide with St. Patrick's Day, Greatest Irish Bands accounts for most of the usual suspects, though often with their highest-profile songs (most of which disregard their Irish roots). The Pogues' "Fairytale of New York" and Thin Lizzy's "Whiskey in the Jar" do show a connection to these bands' distinctive homeland music, though the already over-anthologized "Brown Eyed Girl" by Van Morrison is a song that reveals nothing of Morrison's Belfast influences. It is encouraging to see relatively obscure '80s punkers the Undertones and Stiff Little Fingers receive exposure, but an enclosed free DVD wastes some of its potential by including only a short but sweet indie film, Sightings of Bono. ~ Hal Horowitz | | Although one can forgive the incorrect title (Sin?ad O'Connor, Van Morrison, and Rory Gallagher don't qualify as "bands"), this album's contents are less easily excused. Released in 2004 to coincide with -- you guessed it -- St. Patrick's Day, the compilation has no liner notes, perfunctory track information, substandard artwork, and problematic pacing. Most of the usual suspects are accounted for, but the compilers include only the highest-profile songs, most of which disregard their Irish roots. This is especially unforgivable when there are far more appropriate tracks in these musicians' catalogs to draw on. In particular, the already over-anthologized "Brown Eyed Girl," a song that reveals nothing of Van Morrison's Belfast influences, is the singer's only track. It's an especially poor choice given that he recorded an entire album with the great Irish band the Chieftains. Similarly, Sin?ad O'Connor -- who also recorded traditional Irish songs -- is represented by her mega-hit Prince cover, "Nothing Compares 2 U." Ditto for Rory Gallagher, who occasionally revisited his folksy heritage, but not on the generic blues-rocker "Tattoo'd Lady." Thankfully, the Pogues' "Fairytale of New York" and Thin Lizzy's "Whiskey in the Jar" show a connection to these bands' distinctive homeland music with suitable material. It's also encouraging to see relatively obscure '80s punkers the Undertones and Stiff Little Fingers receive better-late-than-never exposure, but their selections are haphazardly and incongruously placed in the running order. The disc's time is over 25 minutes short of what can fit on a CD, which, for an anthology of this type, is inexcusable. The free DVD also wastes its potential by only using seven minutes to present the short but sweet indie film Sightings of Bono. The lack of essays about the artists and the slapdash, barely major-label-quality graphics further imply that this was a quickie product linked to holiday sales. That's too bad, because with more appropriate song choices, a longer playing time, and a coherent arrangement, this could have been an enlightening document of Irish artists exploring their often hardscrabble sociological backgrounds in the pop marketplace. ~ Hal Horowitz |
