| | Album Notes and Credits | Notes & Personnel Info | | Liner Note Authors: Hova Najarian; Belinda Miller; Irwin Chusid. | | Illustrator: Rodney Alan Greenblat. | | Greasy Kid Stuff, Vol. 2: More Songs From Inside the Radio collects more kid-friendly indie pop and indie rock, including Cub's fizzy album opener "Magic 8 Ball" and Guv'ner's irrepressible "Lucky Ladybug." Though this collection isn't quite as polished as The Powerpuff Girls: Heroes & Villains or Schoolhouse Rock! Rocks, it boasts a similarly star-studded roster and the kind of boundless fun that appeals to indie rockers and kids alike: it was compiled by Hova Najarian and Belinda Miller, a husband and wife DJ team on WFMU, which airs the duo's Greasy Kid Stuff show every Saturday morning. The Mr. T Experience's version of "Unpack Your Adjectives," and Supernova's "Mommy" provide a sugar-buzzed soundtrack for running around or jumping on the bed, while They Might Be Giants' "What Is a Shooting Star?" builds on the duo's natural affinity for kids' music and for turning scientific phenomena into wonderfully catchy songs. However, some of the lesser-known artists included here provide some of the biggest and best surprises: Bent Bolt & the Nuts' "Mechanical Man" is a great throwback to the late-'50s/early-'60s heyday of novelty rock, while Benna's static-laden, eerily pretty version of the Schoolhouse Rock classic "Figure 8" explores the hypnotic side of multiplication rock. "Mouser Mecha-Catbot" by Eban Schletter (who was also the genius behind Mr. Show and SpongeBob SquarePants' musical flights of fancy) is another standout track: written by Schletter for the mechanical melee BattleBots and sung by a friend's nine-year-old daughter, the song is wonderful acknowledgement that girls can be as much (or more) about spice than they are about sugar. Every bit as fun as the first volume of Greasy Kid Stuff, Greasy Kid Stuff, Vol. 2: More Songs From Inside the Radio is perfect for hip families and a welcome antidote to all the plastic, overmerchandised pop sold to children. ~ Heather Phares |
