| | | | LIBERTY CITY, USA. WELCOME TO AMERICA'S WORST CITY. Crime does pay. The hugely successful, highly controversial Grand Theft Auto franchise moves into 3 dimensions in the dark and seedy underworld of Liberty City. With the freedom to go anywhere and jack anyone, Grand Theft Auto 3 puts the dark, intriguing and ruthless world of crime at your fingertips, if you have enough guts to take it. You've been betrayed and left for dead. Now you're taking revenge, unless the city gets you first. Mob bosses need a favor, crooked cops need help and street gangs want you dead. You'll have to rob, steal and kill just to stay out of serious trouble. Anything can happen out here.
Featuring a fully 3-D living city, a combination of narrative driven and non-linear gameplay and a completely open environment, the game represents a huge leap forward in interactive entertainment. For the first time, players are put at the heart of their very own gangster movie, and let loose in a fully-realised 3 dimensional city, in which anything can happen and probably will.
With a cast of hundreds, 50 plus vehicles, ranging from sports cars to ice cream trucks and from boats to buses, 3 hours of music, including opera, reggae, house, drum and bass, pop and disco, a huge array of street ready weapons and some of the seediest characters in video game history, Grand Theft Auto 3 is a sprawling epic which will show you that sometimes, crime can payand sometimes it can pay you back.

5 of 5 Warning: Highly Addictive Tuesday, September 19, 2006 loismustdie_99 from Lex, KY
Wow, I have been in love with this game since, well 2002. Since then, I've been slightly addicted to it. At first all you want to do is kill people, but then you find packages (and get money for them, and you get involved with finding the packages, and killing people while searching for them (I've found all 100 once). Then you get into the missions, and the back-storys of these people. You don't realize how long you have been playing it. Even though the missions can get either too easy, or too hard, you love it no matter what. You'll love to fight with different gangs, and screw people over. While your still earning money. Buy it. 5 of 5 A Bloody, intresting view of the mafia Saturday, October 18, 2003 A Gamer from Minnesota, St.Louis Park
When I first played this game, most of the graphics blew me away. All the things you can do in the game. Jack cars, Blow away whoever you wish, even put a cop down if you feel like it. When you get more weapons, it just gets even better. A fun and bloody challenge between friends, is to see how many people you can kill in a week in the game. There is a chance of friends cheating on it, but it is still an intresting challenge to try if your bored with the missions. Besides, it's slightly amusing to hear the screams of people as you put them down without a second thought. If you are going to get this game, you have to buy it Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Is very cool Wednesday, July 16, 2003 Fred from indio,ca
This game is one of the best games ever made.It is very cool, if you want some action and some fun get this game fast because you won't be able to even sleep playing that game. This game is better than all the games in xbox and gamecube so don't even bother buying one of those cheap game consoles get this one. Also there is Vice City out there and it is even better than these one. I'm telling you buy this one and Vice City too. Don't waste money on xbox or gamecube get the playstation 2 and get these games. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Wow that's how my mom drives!!! Thursday, November 07, 2002 A Gamer from Queens, NY
The last time I saw someone run down this many people my mom was late for work. The graphics are great, the pace is as fast as you make it and the action at times can be intense. Especially if you use the cheat code to make the pedestrians go mad. Then everyone has a weapon and no place is safe. You can jump off the roof of the garage with your cars and do other stunts. This game is just too cool. Of course I need to wait until my son goes to bed to play. Was this review helpful?

The only down side to this game is the P.O.V., maybe by having the P.O.V. of Doom would have tainted this game. Now that's over this game truly ROCKS! Outstanding storyboard, scenes, play and action. Just follow the missions and you can;t get enough, but then go rogue, and open a can of whoop-ass on pedestrians, bad drivers, and cops. Extensive variety of cars, people, and places to be a sniper add spice to the game. You could get lost in it. Was this review helpful?

5 of 5 Extremely fun and high replay value! Wednesday, March 06, 2002 Jon from Santa Rosa, California
This game is amazingly fun. Liberty City (the setting you play in) is very massive and you can see the entire city if you view it from a high elevation. The special effects, the sound, the music, and the gameplay are very impressive. The only part I found a little weird was when you drive by a car that you want to steal, if drive too far away (like one - two blocks away) the car will disappear. That is the only drawback I found. The game is very fast when you are getting chased by police & FBI in cars, helicopters, and <b>tanks</b> (Oh yes). One experience that I has fun with, was I had the FBI chasing after me in helicopters and sedans, and I hopped onto the L-train and watched them crash and create mayhem as they were chasing me while I was riding the train. This type of scene could have been in a Blues Brothers Movie! I don't recommend this game to children! For everyone else, this game is crazy fun, and is very entertaining. Definately in the top 5 games ever. Was this review helpful?

This is one of the greatest games that I have ever played. I am new to Grand Theft Auto series (because the previous ones had cheap top-down graphics). But, ever since I have purchased this game, the entertainment value is beyond excellent. This game has all the qualities that you are looking for -- from mafiosos to Yakuza to Diablos. The city is huge and relatively expansive so it might get confusing particularly when driving like a madman around town. The graphics are decent, but not the best. The characters are still a little bit blocky, but at least, it is crisp. If you can tolerate the character portrayals in Unreal, Unreal Tournament or Deus Ex, you can tolerate the way the characters look in this game. The whole point of the game is to "earn" money (through jobs or mugging people), evade cops and "work" jobs for the gangs and criminal organisations residing in Liberty City. The controls are excellent, being very responsive and sensitive. The cinemagraphics are decent, but the voiceovers are spectacular. It sounds like a mafia movie or the Sopranos; in fact, the guy from the Sopranos even had a voiceover for this Grand Theft Auto game! The radio stations in this game is definitely a nice touch. I personally like listening to Double Cleff FM (especially when riding a Mafia Sentinel), Game FM, MSX FM and Chatterbox FM. Their is even an "oldies" ('70s-'80s) radio station (which I would never listen to!). This game does have excellent replay value; in fact, it makes Deus Ex, Unreal Tournament, or Quake look real primitive compared to this. There are several faults with the game that I can think of. First, the AI does have short attention span. Second, the graphics could possibly be better. Lastly, the aim feature of the weapons should be better. This game alone is worth buying a PS 2. 5 of 5 The coolest game I have ever played Monday, February 11, 2002 A Gamer from Senatobia, MS
Man if you haven't played this game there is something wrong with you. When I played it for the first time it stunned me on how good it was. This is the best game I have ever played. Hey if you want to buy this game don't tell your parents how much violence it has (if they care) This is the best game out for Playstation 2 right now and it is not a lie. So buy the best game out there and have the time of you life. I have it on the way to my house. Buy it right away before it is too late. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 The Most Fun an Adult Can Have With A Game!? Thursday, January 31, 2002 corey from Minneapolis, MN
GTA3 is the epidemy of what a game needs to be. It allows you to escape reality for a time and enter a real breathing virtual world. It's amazing to see the different people on the street react differently to your "acts of violence." But beware THIS GAME IS NOT FOR THE KIDS. It is rated "M" and rightfully so. It's a ton of fun to just run around and shoot stuff up and the missions put you in the shoes of a mobster for hire (sort of). It's great fun and you will ONLY BE ABLE TO PLAY IT ON THE PS2 till next Fall when it is finally released on other systems. But by then us PS2 owners will be playing GTA4 which comes out next November. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 This game is sweet Wednesday, January 30, 2002 Big J from Kansas
This game is so sweet you will play it over and over. Admit it, you dreamed of being a lackey for organized crime. This is the way to do it "Legaly" anyways. This game has great gameplay with hours of "sweetness" great graphics with detailed cars, its pretty easy even though some of the levels were a little hard, and its overall one of the greatest games I ever played its number 3 on my all time fav's. First fav is FFX for PS2 and second is Max Payne for PS2. So I advise you to get this game, but only for the more mature audience. Was this review helpful?

5 of 5 The best game I've played Monday, January 07, 2002 SkiniKid from Indiana
The game has so much freedom and there are almost no limits to the things you can do. I would have to say the most wanted game of 2001 and maybe even 2002 we can't be sure though cause Playstation continues to surpise use with one good game after another Was this review helpful?

This is by far the best RPG out for PS2 but its also a very very violent game and shouldn’t be bought for 10 year old kids or for parents who want to be over-protective then its not for 14 year-olds lol! Another thing is that this game is about to be released on Xbox soon so don’t waste your money on the PS2 for this game if you want an Xbox get one. Was this review helpful?

I'm sure glad I returned what I got for Christmas and bought this game!!!! I think everything has been said, but let me repeat, this game is awesome! I get bored with games really quick, but not this one. You can just roam around the city causing trouble without even thinking about completing any missions. The feel, and look of this game is one of the best I have ever seen. I almost feel remorse for beating people with a bat on the street to a bloody pulp (Almost). Hop into cop cars, hummers, fire trucks, you name it. I never thought I could pick up a ganster's girlfriend with a moving truck, but I did! I can go on and on, but I'm going to get back to playing this game! Don't rent, don't borrow, BUY this game. If PS2 continues to have games like this, I think people very shortly will be saying "..what, XBOX? what, Game triangle? whats that?"

This game may be violent, but if you detach yourself from reality, it is hilarious. Get out your frustrations, lose yourself in crime, waste hours playing one of the funnest games ever for the Playstation 2. I love that it's completely free flowing. I can mug people, jack cars, complete missions, or just cruise around and cause mischief. What could be more fun, especially at Christmas time :) Was this review helpful?

I think everything positive about this game has already been said, so let me just highlight the fact that this game has many hours of replay value. With so many things to do, even after completing the main missions, you can easily spend 60+ hours playing this game and never get bored or do the same thing twice.
That fact alone makes this game worth every penny! Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 THIS GAME IS AWESOME Thursday, November 22, 2001 A Gamer from Smithtown, New York
This Game is so AWESOME. You are a mugger and you have to kill people for their money or weapons. Some people don't have money but the ones that do sometimes are running around from a person. Your in different cities like New York. Some civilians have guns and they shoot you after you have hurt them or kill someone in front of them. Some guns are hidden! This game is like kingpin or soilder of fortune. If you like those games you will like this. On a 1/10 scale I would give this game a 9 1/2 because the graphics arent that great, but they still meet PS2's requirements. Hint: People in the subways always have money. Tell me want you think e-mail me at zombiedog89@hotmail.com Was this review helpful?

Oh Boy!!! Oh Boy!!! The most anticipated game for me delivered a perfect 10. Not only was I stunned by the graphic boost from the last one but the gameplay simply amazed me. The thought of just being a hitman doing dirt for the Don and his boys and moving up is just so appealing. Everyone at one time or another has wanted to do some of the things that this game allows you to do. Just when you thought this game had reached its peak it throws you complete curve and sends you spinning in awe. You will not be disappointed with this game. Was this review helpful?

The best single-player game ever (Yes, even better than Half-Life). Deep plot line, open ended gameplay and small touches make this game a must buy for ADULTS. No kids, no teens, ADULTS. Was this review helpful?

This is one the most best games I have ever seen!! It is so perfect, I just want to cry!! This game with an M rating is one of the most violent games I have ever seen! I have not played this yet, but by the looks of it, it looks awesome. With over 80 missions and all of the weaponary you need, this is a MUST HAVE game for every PS2 or action lover!!! With blood, violence, and strong language, this game is unsuitable for kids under 17. If this game is not too violent for you, better pick one up, or else... Was this review helpful?

GTA, the formula is getting old, but transferring it to 3D gives it new means. This, is your chance to make your own gangsta movie, and interact with it. While the graphics are not the sharpest of the PS2, it's still extremely good looking, and very interactive. Music and Voice acting are insane, and I don't know how they fit it all on to one disc and still make it so fun. Controls are tight, and driving feels somewhat like an aracade racer rather than simulation. Concept is great and the story never gets old. Plan to live this life for a long..long..time. I love you guys rockstargames! Was this review helpful?
8 of 12 customers found this review helpful. 5 of 5 rare excellent game for ps2 Wednesday, October 24, 2001 Wigby from Brooklyn NY
This is the most fun I've had in years playing a game. GTA3 contains the perfect mix of godgame, action shooter and simulation. Gameplay is intoxicating and hilarious without even completing a single mission. Controls are responsive. This game also has better driving physics than any racer I've played and it's not even a racer! Graphics finally showcase PS2 lighting effects capability. Best looking PS2 game hands down-not that it looks realistic but the design and execution are great. Sound is nice-radio stations in car are a nice touch. Multiple camera angles are all worth checking out and useful too. My only little gripe is the short attention span of the AI. Like a disturbing film, GTA3 excels not only in showing a world gone wrong but how you (viewer/gamer) fit into it all. Was this review helpful?
