What happens when you abandon your roots to follow your dreams? Is it ever possible to leave the past behind? Those questions are addressed in The Gospel, a film that follows a young man's attempt to purge himself of his past, but who is ultimately forced to confront it even more deeply than he ever could have imagined.
R&B stars reaches the pinnacle of fame when tragedy strikes and his pastor father falls ills. Forced to return home from the road and witness the flagging congregation and his childhood nemesis crafting a new direction for the once thriving church, he deals with the tug of familial loyalty vs. career ambitions that offer him the chance to either find salvation or self-destruct.
The Gospel features an all-star cast, including Idris Elba (The Wire), Nona Gaye (Crash), Tamyra Gray (American Idol), Keshia Knight Pulliam (The Cosby Show) and Bruce Kodjoe (Brown Sugar).
| | Album Notes and Credits | Notes & Personnel Info | | Personnel: Fred Hammond (vocals, keyboards); Spanky Alford, Hanan Rubinstein (guitar); Rodney East, PJ Morton (keyboards); Larry Tucker, Ray Bady (drums); Rudy Bird (percussion). | | Audio Mixers: Fred Hammond; Kevin Jackson; Ray Hammond. | | Recording information: Face To Face Studios, Southfield, MI. | | Given that the film THE GOSPEL features guest appearances by many of the genre's biggest musical stars, it's only fitting that some of those performers (including Yolanda Adams, Martha Munizzi, and Fred Hammond) contribute to the soundtrack. Combining more traditional songs of praise (uplifting as always) with hip-hop- and R&B-tinged tracks, this soundtrack presents a nice snapshot of the evolving sound of gospel up to this point, and illuminates the often inspiring tension between church and secular music that forms the dramatic crux of the film. | Producer: Kirk Franklin; Donnie McClurkin; Fred Hammond; Aaron Lindsey; JoAnn Rosario; Sanchez Harley; Steve "Stone" Huff; Steve "Supe" White; Ralph Kearns; Ali Shaheed Muhammad; Kirk Franklin | Engineer: Frencesco Perlangeli; Kevin Jackson; Jeff Vereb; Darius Fentress; Rich Tapper |
