Thr Gorillapod is excellent for hiking because of the light weight even with a small ballhead it weighs just 10 3/4 oz. My old compact tripod weighed over 3 lbs.

I find this item does not work as well as expected.
Having said that, it was still really useful to have around.
When wrapping it around, it was not as steady as I thought it would be. The fear was not having my camera fall as much as the steadiness required for darker shots etc.
It was nice for getting myself included in casual shots (with the self-timer), but I was a bit disappointed in the clarity of my night shots. I had wrapped it around a telephone pole.
On the flip side, if you cannot lug around a big tripod, this was a great thing to have with you.
Bottom line, this was worth buying. At the end of the day, it is definitely better than nothing or some of the other products out there.
