"...A film stamped with the Steven Spielberg style of high fun....A roller coaster ride..." 06/05/1985

Empire
4 stars out of 5 -- "A kind of talismanic film for anyone born circa 1975, Richard Donner's seven-kids-go-in-search-of-pirate-treasure is boisterous, undisciplined fun....This is nostalgic gold." 12/01/2008 p.197

Leonard Maltin's Movie & Video Guide 7 of 10
...old-fashioned adventure yarn... Big, lively, and exceptionally noisy, aimed squarely at kids, with a likable bunch of kids onscreen.

5 of 5 This film is a classic!!! A must see. Tuesday, January 17, 2006
Jarod from Los Angeles, CA.

I purchased this movie because I had seen it when I was younger and remembered that it was enjoyable. I wanted to see if my children (ages 10, 4 and 2) would find it entertaining as well. They absolutely love this movie! It holds their attention, keeps them in awe and makes them laugh every time they see it. I highly recommend it for people of all ages!

5 of 5 A Great Adventure Movie Thursday, March 04, 2004
A Viewer from Council Bluffs, IA
Goonies is a great movie for the entire family, and it is quickly becoming a classic. Everyone I talk to remembers this movie as a kid and owns their own copy. Goonies starts off quick and dosen't slow down until the credits. It will keep you on the edge of you seat and feeling good at the end. There are a couple of scenes that will make you jump but this movie is laugh out loud funny. Just a great great film.

3 of 5 A mediocre kids movie Saturday, May 10, 2003
A Viewer from Union City, CA
If you are a parent looking to buy this for your child, the first thing you must know is that there was no such thing as a PG-13 rating when this film started production. The film was given a PG rating, but by today's standards I cannot imagine it getting less than PG-13. Ironically, I can't tell you what was wrong with it since doing so would violate this site's guidelines. That should be considered highly unusual for a PG movie. Suffice to say, profanity is used repeatedly. And it's not mild profanity. The story centers around a band of misfits. They are poorly behaved and vulgar, yet the mother does not seem terribly upset. The movie contains numerous drug references and references to sexual torture devices. Aside from that, it may be well suited to a pre-teen or an older child. The children go on a quest to find some missing treasure so that they may save their homes from being foreclosed by an evil real-estate developer. From there, the plot goes exactly where you would expect. There are the requisite mishaps along the way, as well as the obligatory bad guys who are one step behind them. And of course they find the treasure in the end, nobody gets hurt, and the bad guys get caught. I'll leave it to you to find out if they save their homes or not. While the overall plot is transparent and unimaginative, there are enough details and plot twists along the way to keep a child entertained. However, this film will frighten young children more so than many current PG-13 films.
