 Editor's Note
Based on Nicholas Pileggi's book WISEGUY, Martin Scorsese's GOODFELLAS is a wry, violent, and exhilarating film about the life of Henry Hill, an aspiring criminal who ends up in the FBI's witness protection program after testifying against his former partners. As a poor Irish-Italian growing up in 1950s New York City, Hill (Ray Liotta) rises through the ranks of his Brooklyn neighborhood's organized crime branch, and with money from the mob he begins living the good life, complete with a beautiful bride, Karen (Lorraine Bracco), a fancy house, and the best seats at the most exclusive restaurants. A botched robbery lands Henry in prison for a brief period of time, and when he gets released, his reckless infidelities and drug abuse damage his association with his adopted family.Scorsese's film is a visual and sonic onslaught, featuring a brilliant pop-music soundtrack and stunning camera work--including the infamous Steadicam one-take that introduces the audience to the Copacabana's patrons. He uses the songs to infuse a breathtaking, invigorating rhythm into every scene. As the psychopathic Tommy DeVito, Joe Pesci delivers an unforgettable performance that is alarming in its cold-blooded callousness, helping to cement GOODFELLAS' place as a classic portrait of life in the mob.
 Plot Summary
Martin Scorsese's classic crime drama follows Henry Hill from his beginnings as a petty criminal to his inclusion into one of the world's most ruthless mobs. Featuring a nostalgic soundtrack and inventive camera work, GOODFELLAS throbs with an obscene amount of electricity. Ray Liotta and Robert De Niro bring Scorsese and Pileggi's script to life with great fervor, but it is Joe Pesci who steals the show with his portrayal of Tommy DeVito, a psychopathic gangster who is terrifyingly short-tempered. Simply put, GOODFELLAS is one of the most striking crime films ever made.

This is better than the Godfather Series. You don't have to wait for the storyline to start kicking in, the action starts immediately. Was this review helpful?

This movie is so well made that you can watch it everyday and you will pick up something new. This is not only filmmaking at it's best but great acting as well. Ray Liotta breaks out in this role supported by DeNiro and Pesci. You got to get this on DVD. Was this review helpful?

5 of 5 Goodfellas Do Bad Things Wednesday, September 29, 1999 Dan M from Seattle, WA
One of the best movies of the 90's, and one of the top gangster movies of all time. The DVD contains a half dozen pages of production notes which defined the movie best: Scorcese set out to make a film that showed the daily life of a man in the mob, instead of the usual Hollywood gang war violence. Much of the movie contains voice-over narrations by the main characters, and several deliciously long tracking shots (Scorcese trademark). Acting is top notch. Pesci won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar. I'm surprised Liotta wasn't nominated. An absorbing story. If you liked 'Casino', you'll like this movie. No surprise because 'Casino' reunited Pesci, Deniro and Scorcese. The DVD also contains two virtually identical theatrical trailers which show nothing new. One last BOO to Warner for a mediocre DVD transfer. One 3-second shot has a vertical black line the entire height of the frame, right through Deniro! Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 A D*mn Good Movie Saturday, September 04, 1999 seldaek from Indianapolis, IN
Goodfellas is an excellent film. Though brutal at times, this depiction of the life of a man whose life was spent in the mob is a movie which will grab your attention from start to finish. Was this review helpful?
