The six-disc box set GOODBYE, BABYLON is a remarkable undertaking--an elaborately packaged, painstakingly produced document of early American gospel music in all its forms. Focusing on the golden age of gospel (mid-1920s to mid-'50s), this landmark release is arranged thematically, with each disc devoted to a different aspect of spiritual music (sin, salvation, etc.).
Even as it provides an enthralling musical history lesson, GOODBYE, BABYLON explodes preconceptions about the origins and development of gospel. The '50s country sound of Wilma Lee & Stoney Cooper, the banjo-driven string-band style of '20s/''30s folk icon Uncle Dave Macon, and the early blues of Blind Willie Johnson all fit comfortably together, and are buttressed by bluegrass from the Stanley Brothers, old-school gospel by Rev. Thomas A. Dorsey, and a host of others. From the most revered names in American music (Hank Williams, Mahalia Jackson, the Carter Family) to the most obscure (A.A. Gray & Seven Foot Dilly are hardly household names outside the realms of the most ravenous 78 collectors), this overwhelming but immensely satisfying set encompasses all the branches of gospel's family tree, with luxurious packaging and copious liner notes further sweetening the already-attractive deal.
