 Editor's Note
The basis for the 2000 film starring Nicolas Cage and Angelina Jolie, 1974's GONE IN 60 SECONDS is a revered cult classic, mostly because of the delirious 40 minute car chase that concludes the film. Directed by its star, writer, producer, and stunt driver H.B. Halicki, GONE IN 60 SECONDS was a drive-in phenomenon when it was originally released. In it, Maindrian Pace and a group of his colleagues race to steal 48 specific makes and models of cars in a week, which will net them $250,000 if they succeed. However, the group runs into trouble trying to jack a 1973 Mach 1 Mustang, and Pace ends up being chased through seven counties by throngs of police in what is probably the most exciting and ambitious car chase ever filmed.

4 of 5 Lots of cars going CRASH, BANG! What's not to like Saturday, January 04, 2003 archone from Sacramento, CA
Unlike the current remake, the Original Gone in 60 Seconds has a very minimal plot. Its entire marketing revolved around two things, 1) the astounding amount of cars that were destroyed in making this movie, and 2) the most incredible chase scene ever done on film. Many people remember Steve McQueen's chase in Bullit, but really folks, THAT doesn't hold a candle to this, not to mention that its a MUCH longer chase without camera tricks used in that movie. Like the current remake, virtually the entire movie centers around one big massive chase. This is Crazy Larry taken five steps higher. Its not high art, but it is entertaining. Sit back, turn your brain off, and kick it into fifth gear. Was this review helpful?
