As one of the flagship bands of the Motown label, the Supremes helped define the Sound of Young America with a slew of pristine R&B/soul classics. Lead singer Diana Ross would eventually emerge as the group's breakout star, a fact solidified by the group's name change to Diana Ross & the Supremes in 1967. Ross left the group in 1969 to pursue a solo career, and though the Supremes soldiered on without her for several years, they would never regain the power they had during the 1960s. The 1981 musical DREAMGIRLS was based on the story of the Supremes, and was turned into a critically acclaimed film in 2006.
