One year ago, Sarah Palin burst onto the national political stage like a comet. Yet even now, few Americans know who this remarkable woman really is.

On September 3, 2008 Alaska Governor and vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin delivered a speech at the Republican National Convention that electrified the nation and instantly made her one of the most recognizable women in the world.

As chief executive of America’s largest state, she had built a record as a reformer who cast aside politics-as-usual and pushed through changes other politicians only talked about: Energy independence. Ethics reform. And the biggest private sector infrastructure project in U.S. history. And while revitalizing public school funding and ensuring the state met its responsibilities to seniors and Alaska Native populations, Palin also beat the political "good ol' boys club" at their own game and brought Big Oil to heel.

Like her GOP running mate, John McCain, Palin wasn’t a packaged and over-produced candidate. She was a Main Street American woman: a working mom, wife of a blue-collar union man, and mother of five children, the eldest of whom is serving his country in Iraq and the youngest, an infant with special needs. Palin’s hometown story touched a populist nerve, rallying hundreds of thousands of ordinary Americans to the GOP ticket.

But as the campaign unfolded, Palin became a lightning rod for both praise and criticism. Supporters called her "refreshing" and "honest," a kitchen-table public servant they felt would fight for their interests. Opponents derided her as a wide-eyed Pollyanna unprepared for national leadership. But none of them knew the real Sarah Palin.

In this eagerly anticipated memoir, Palin paints an intimate portrait of growing up in the wilds of Alaska; meeting her lifelong love; her decision to enter politics; the importance of faith and family; and the unique joys and trials of life as a high-profile working mother. She also opens up for the first time about the 2008 presidential race, providing a rare, mom’s-eye view of high-stakes national politics—from patriots dedicated to "Country First" to slick politicos bent on winning at any cost.

Going Rogue traces one ordinary citizen's extraordinary journey and imparts Palin’s vision of a way forward for America and her unfailing hope in the greatest nation on earth.

Annotation:
Some might recall that Barack Obama rose to prominence on the strength of two bestselling books, and now his possible 2012 rival for the White House is trying to follow suit. In this provocative memoir, Sarah Palin details her unique Alaskan upbringing, relives her rapid ascension to the national spotlight, and provides more of the candid, homespun wisdom for which she is best known. GOING ROGUE will be required reading for supporters of both political parties, as Republicans look for answers and Democrats look for ammunition.

You know the instant fame brought to a woman from Wasilla— Sarah Palin -- when John McCain chose her as running mate (Sept. 2008). Since that fateful day, barely a year out, she has penned a standard 413-page memoir (sans index). After the election she thought that the former running team McCain-Palin would return to business as usual and remain content in elected offices. McCain did return to Washington and the senate. Sarah returned to Wasilla and Anchorage, Alaska. Then on July 3, 2009 she resigned from her job as governor of Alaska at a press conference, to the surprise of the political world.Going Rogue is the fruit of her decision. ...read the full review

"GOING ROGUE...is part cagey spin, part earnest autobiography, part payback hit job. And its most compelling sections deal not with politics but with Ms. Palin's life in Alaska and her family....The self-portrait created in these pages recalls the early profiles of Ms. Palin that appeared just after her debut on the national stage: a self-reliant frontierswoman who knows how to field dress a moose; a feisty gal with lots of moxie and pep; a former beauty queen with a George W. Bush-like aptitude for mangling the English language." - Michiko Kakutani 11/16/2009

"GOING ROGUE is more a personal memoir than a political one....Mrs. Palin emerges as a new style of feminist: a politician who took on the Ole Boy network and won; a wife with a supportive husband whose career takes second place to hers; and a mother who, unlike working women of an earlier age, isn't shy about showcasing her family responsibilities....This is not the prejudiced, dim-witted ideologue of the popular liberal imagination." - Melanie Kirkpatrick 11/16/2009

"[O]ne comes away from this book impressed by her political acumen, emotional intelligence, and her knowledge of energy issues. Her innate ability to connect with people and lack of pretension are reminiscent of the skill set that Ronald Reagan possessed....[But] Palin has a way to go before she is likely to be perceived as having that kind of stature. It is not at all clear how GOING ROGUE will help her get there." - Claude R. Marx 11/27/2009
