Editor's Note

GLORY recounts the bravery of a group of Civil War soldiers often overlooked by history--the 54th Regiment of Massachusetts, a troop of free black men who fought to help win liberty for their enslaved brothers. Based on the historical novels ONE GALLANT RUSH by Peter Burchand and LAY THIS LAUREL by Lincoln Kirstein and the letters of Robert Gould Shaw, the film follows the youthful Colonel Shaw (Matthew Broderick) as he takes responsibility for readying these soldiers for battle. Shaw, a privileged young Boston Brahman, finds the job harder than expected because many of the men balk at taking orders from him. Private Trip (Denzel Washington) is especially resistant to Shaw's leadership, but over time the two come to an understanding as they endure the hardships of the war. On July 18, 1863, Shaw volunteers the 54th for the honor of leading the charge against Ft. Wagner, a mission that means almost certain death, with Trip carrying the regiment's colors into battle. This gritty and realistic vision of the horrors of war is a moving and critical examination of a lost piece of history. Beautifully shot and triumphantly acted (by a cast that also includes Morgan Freeman, Cary Elwes, and Andre Braugher), director Edward Zwick's film serves as a tribute to the courage and selfless bravery of the black soldiers of the Civil War.

Plot Summary

Glory is, without question, one of the best movies ever made about the American Civil War (a.k.a. "The War Between the States"). The reason isn't just the way in which Kevin Jarre's script illuminates a frequent oversight of history books, nor is it the fine acting or epic feel that director Edward Zwick achieves on a modest budget -- although those elements are part of Glory's effectiveness. Rather, it is the way in which the filmmakers weave an impressively large historical tapestry without ever losing sight of the characters that make up the individual threads. Glory has important things to say, yet it does so without becoming pedantic...Glory is constructed as an inspirational tale, but the inspiration is not forced or false. It is rooted in the characters and the manner in which they overcome obstacles, including, most prominently, their own personal demons...Glory has become one of the most frequently shown motion pictures in high schools. In large part because of the film, there has been a greater awareness of the importance of African American soldiers in the Civil War. Even if it were not for that development, Glory would still be a memorable motion picture. It has all the elements of a great film, and it remains as stirring and forceful today as it was during its initial release. - James Berardinelli

Chicago Sun-Times 9 of 10
The story goes that the author of "Glory," Kevin Jarre, was walking across Boston Common one day when he noticed something about a Civil War memorial that he had never noticed before. Some of the soldiers in it were black. Although the American Civil War is often referred to as the war to free the slaves, it had never occurred to Jarre - or, apparently, to very many others - that blacks themselves fought in the war. The inspiration for "Glory" came to Jarre as he stood looking at the monument..."Glory" is a strong and valuable film no matter whose eyes it is seen through. But there is still, I suspect, another and quite different film to be made from this same material. - Roger Ebert

The Washington Post 8 of 10
"Glory," a historical drama about a black regiment that proves its mettle during the Civil War, may not hold up to intense scrutiny but it marches to the glorious beat that fired up the Massachusetts 54th...And it's hard not to get carried along...The flaws are many, should you look for them. Scriptwriter Jarre (whose previous credit is, uh, "Rambo: First Blood Part II") provides only a superficial sense of his characters' dreams (his script is made better by the performers); that liberal-hearted, misty-eyed giddiness (thanks chiefly to the gushy, rhapsodizing score by James Horner) frequently gets way out of hand; and Broderick, as the Boston Brahmin who leads the 54th to timeless glory, provides a certain, gee-willikers empathy, but he should probably give Neil Simon a call and see what's shaking...In this movie, he's an amiable non-presence, creating unintentionally the notion that the 54th earned their stripes despite wimpy leadership...For the regiment in "Glory," earning those military stripes also means proving its manhood to the nation. If that seems outdated and racially insulting today, it was no such thing in an age when Americans (on both sides of the Mason-Dixon line) considered blacks childlike, immoral and militarily incapable (an attitude that, of course, no longer exists...). Washington, Freeman and company give that goal, and this movie, an updated vitality. - Desson Howe

4 of 5 Glory, Educational Tool? Sunday, June 17, 2007
A Viewer from MA

Glory tells the tale of the Massachusetts 54th, the first all African-American regiment of the Union Army during the Civil War. Robert Gould Shaw played by Matthew Broderick is the commander of the army and Denzel Washington plays an runaway slave turned soldier. The story follows the regiment as learn how to become proper soldiers and they continue to face discrimination. After months of training and doing the hard labor, the men fight in their first major battle at Fort Wagner, where many men are lost including the commander, Shaw. Glory is a useful tool when teaching students about the Civil War and aspects that they might not have learned. Though the truth is stretched a little bit to make the movie work and more heroic, the basis is the same as the historical event and students can learn about the first troop to brake the color barrior.

5 of 5 "Glory" Tuesday, June 12, 2007
A Viewer from Georgetown MA
"Glory" is a movie with a deep meaning hiding behind the action. It is not just another war movie; it actually has historical significance. It is based on the true stories of the first all-black Union army regiment, the Massachusetts 54th Regiment, during the Civil War. It tells the stories of Robert Shaw, the highly respected general of the regiment, and other honorable men in the troops. It correctly follows the mental and physical journey of the men as they progressed through the war. Because the film is historically accurate, anyone can learn form watching it. It is useful in learning about history and the Civil War because it gives well-acted portrayals of each certain person or battle of the MA 54th.

3 of 5 Glory Review Tuesday, June 12, 2007
matt from Georgetown washington university
The movie Glory was about the 54th massachusetts regiment. Glory is based through the eyes of the leading general Robert Gould Shaw. Glory was a good action movie with some parts leaving you on the edge of your seat. However their were some minor historical inaccuarsies. One of the misconseptions is that the slaves are runaways. This is not true and were actually well educated. The acting in Glory was very good including people like Denzel washington. Glory also showed how the men in the regiment felt about the war. Many eager to fight but once the soldiers expirenced war they were not so sure on how they felt. Overall glory was a decent movie if you would like learn alittle on the 54th massachusetts regiment.

5 of 5 Glory changes history Tuesday, June 12, 2007
A Viewer from MA
Glory was a great movie that was one of the first movies to tell the tale of the heroic Massachusetts 54th Infantry. It showed the regiment beginning, with its many volunteers and high spirits, but at that time it was also scorned and looked down upon. At first, the Infantry encountered problems, and one man refused to give the men shoes that they were in dire need of. But later, their determination and spirit shone through, and they led the suicidal assault on Fort Wagner, where they proved their ture strength, as well as Colonel Robert Gould Shaw, their leader, played by Matthew Broderick, did. The movie was enhanced with a great cast of Denzel Washington, Morgan Freeman, and Matthew Broderick, along with a few others. Glory finally gave the black men who fought in the Civil War the recognition they deserved and told a truly inspiring tale. The movie Glory demonstrates how devoted and dedicated blacks were to the cause, with their constant yearning to fight and win. It makes them seem like heroes, which they should be seen as. The movie also changes how we remember the Civil War, because many people saw it, and it is therefore recognized as a major help to giving blacks credit in the Civil War. Glory also says many things about the time that it was made, because it could not have been made in the 1800s or early 1990s due to the abundance of racism. But instead, Glory was made in 1989, right after the Civil Rights movement for blacks because racism had decreased quite a lot and blacks were being recognized even more. The first Martin Luther King Junior Day and black history month were celebrated shortly before the popular movie Glory was released. Glory is definitely a good movie to see because it was action packed, inspiring, and helps to tell the tale of the blacks’ history in the Civil War.

4 of 5 Good movie, but minor historical inaccuarcies Tuesday, June 12, 2007
mike from Massachusetts
The Basic story line for the Massachusetts 54th was historically accurate, yet there were minor flaws that were used to catch the audiences’ attention. The Massachusetts 54th was the first all black regiment to fight in the Civil War. This movie’s story was about the struggles that the 54th had to go through to actually fight in the Civil War and over come the racial judgements. Robert Gould Shaw was one of the main characters and was the General of the Massachusetts 54th. He was portrayed as a young, weak man, yet in reality though short, he was a strong and athletic individual. The movie also focused on the struggles of the men in the regiment by filiming what historians thought the camp life was like for the 54th. Though no one really knows what the camp life was like or the personalities of the men in the regiment, the director did his best to imagine what it could have been like. Through the mysteries of the reality in the Massachusetts 54th, Glory did a great job of making the audience feel the inspiration of the 54th.

4 of 5 Glory Tuesday, June 12, 2007
A Viewer from Georgetown, MA
The movie was during the time of the Civil War,thoughout the movie there were many historical facts and events portrayed. This movie told the story of the first black regiment group to fight in the Civil War for the Union. This regiment was know as the Massachusetts 54 Volunteer regiment. Glory is seen though the eyes of Robert Gould Shaw who was the colonel of the 54 Massachusetts regiment. The movie show the stuggle Shaw faces to get supplies for his troops and to get his army into battle. At the final battle in the movie, colonel Shaw leads his men into battle at Fort Wagner where they display their courage and overcome their problems. Glory was a very historically accurate dipiction of the Civil War by showing the hardships the 54 Massachusetts regiment faced.

4 of 5 Glory: Story of the Massachusetts 54th regiment Tuesday, June 12, 2007
K.G. from Georgetown, MA
Glory, released in 1989, was was a depiction of the Massachusetts 54th regiment. It showed the story of the first black regiment to fight for the Union in the Civil War. The movie is told throught the perspective of Robert Gould Shaw, colonel of the group of black soldiers. These men were fighting to show the whites that they too were capable of defending their country and were hoping to gain respect and citizenship. There were many problems that the regiment faced throughtout their journey such as being assigned a lower pay, three dollars less than the white soldiers. Also, the men were not given shoes or uniforms because many people did not believe they would ever be capable of fighting. During the final battle in this movie, the men got a chance to show their courage and overcome all obstacles they faced. All in all, this movie was very action filled and displays an accurate depiction of the hardships the black men faced when fighting in the Civil War.

4 of 5 Glory Review Tuesday, June 12, 2007
melwgaddyiii from MA
“Glory” starring Matthiew Broderic, Morgan Freeman, Samuel L. Jackson, and others is a classic war movie and is commendable for both its cinematography, and historical accuracy. The history of the Massachusetts 54th regimant is portrayed in Glory, and is charecterised from the humble begennings at Camp Megis, in Redville MA to the valliant assualt at Ft. Wagner. Colonial Robert Gould Shaw is the main character, and the movie is based on his letters which he worte home during his time of service. There are some misconceptions in “Glory”, such as the fact that the men of the MA 54th were protrayed as runaway slaves, but in reality most were born free and educated. Cinematographically, “Glory” is supiror to many other civil war movies made, and it tends to have a better qulity acting. The Plot is exemplar, and this is a story that should be told over and over, and the audience will want to hear it.

5 of 5 Glory is a must see for those interested in the Ci Tuesday, June 12, 2007
A Viewer from Georgetown Massachusetts
Glory tells the story of the Massachusetts 54th, the first all black regiment from the North during the Civil War. It follows their story from the day it the regiment was created to their historic charge at Fort Wagner. Glory is a great film for those who want an accurate depiction of what the 54th was faced with. The movie shows the many hardships the soldiers faced, from their harsh training, discrimination, and tension within their own ranks. The actors do an amazing job at bringing their characters to life. Denzel Washington who won an award for his performance as Private Trip, brings an emotionally strong preformance to the movie. Matthew Broderick and Morgan Freeman also have strong performances as Colonel Robert Shaw and Sergeant John Rawlins. Glory's biggest strength though is the fact that it is a great way to learn about the 54th in many ways that text books don't cover. Instead of focusing on just battles the movies shows the social struggles that both the black soldiers and white officers had to face. In my opinion Glory is a movie that should be seen by everyone studying about the Civil War.

4 of 5 Glory is a riveting Civil War movie with an excell Tuesday, June 12, 2007
A Viewer from Salem New Hampshire
Glory is a Civil War movie which focuses on the first all black regiment called the Massachusetts 54th. In the beginning they are treated unfairly when deprived of the basic necessities, but as the movie progresses the 54th earns more and more respect amongst their white colleagues. Their valor is truely tested at Fort Wagner, South Carolina when the 54th is put up against a strong Confederate force. Many died in this struggle, but their efforts later led to the use of more and more black soldiers which arguably clinched Union victory during the Civil War. Glory is definately a useful tool for learning about the role of blacks during the Civil War. It shows the long struggle for racial equality in the United States and how America finally accepted them for who they were.
