THE GIUSEPPI LOGAN QUARTET (1964) was Logan's first date; it features the excellent personnel of drummer Milford Graves, bassist Eddie Gomez, and pianist Don Pullen. Logan plays alto and tenor sax, clarinet, flute, and Pakistani oboe, and the music is both exploratory and staunchly in the free-jazz realm. Indian sounds and instruments wouldn't become popular until some years later, but Graves's occasional use of tabla on this set gives some of the music a vague South Asian feel. |
