| | Professional Reviews | Variety.com 7 of 10 It can't be this simple: The key to a great reality show is...little dogs. Sharon's puny pooch stole the show on "The Osbournes," and now E!'s "The Girls Next Door," about the lives of Hugh Hefner's girlfriends who reside at the Playboy mansion, is peppered with freakishly fluffy canines that yelp and yelp. It's also stuffed with some of the dumbest women you'll ever want to switch places with (or date), ladies whose day revolves strictly around hair appointments, the gym and premieres...But that actually makes for some good television, and the basic cabler, which has had more misses than hits in the genre it supposedly lives on, finds itself with something it shouldn't be embarrassed to tout. - Michael Speier The Hollywood Reporter 8 of 10 Rather than on the Playboy magnate himself, the focus here falls on Hefner's three "leading ladies": 25-year-old Holly, 31-year-old Bridget and 20-year-old Kendra. Their combined ages don't equal that of the man with whom they're sharing a relationship. And while this unscripted trifle labors mightily to make the women interesting, in the opener it proves far too tall an order...What's potentially most interesting here is what isn't shown or discussed -- namely, what their true physical relationship is with Hefner and whether this really is the big happy family they all claim it to be. - Ray Richmond
