Editor's Note

The band of ghost busters are back to save the universe. Having been put out of commission due to a judicial court order, the fearless four pull out all psychic stops to put an end to a demonic river of slime and rescue Dana Barrett (Sigourney Weaver) and her child. In order to achieve this, they must convince New York that all the city's negative energy is feeding the evil spirits in the river, so the city's residents need to resist all negativity!

In comedy, laughs are the bottom line, and by this criterion Ghostbusters II is well into the black almost before the opening credits have rolled. Hammered together out of the junkiest of elements, the movie rattles along with a pleasing rambunctiousness, tossing off its quips and one-liners and scoring on a remarkably high percentage of them. Directed (again) by Ivan Reitman, from the script (again) from Harold Ramis and Dan Aykroyd, the picture is neither slick nor streamlined. It's a mishmash, like the first film, big and dumb and clunky. But the dumbness has personality and invention, much more so than in the first film, and the jokes spring right out of the heart of America's long trash heritage. It's classically dumb. Usually there's an arrogance in sequelmakers. They know they've got you, regardless of what's up on the screen, and the result is often listless and routine, filmmaking by rote. The results here, though, are just the opposite. It's better-looking than the first production... and less mechanical (the gags aren't as programmed or as dependent upon special effects). The filmmakers' confidence in their audience's affection seems to have freed them to relax and play around with their material. Rather than give us less, they give us more. More and better. - Hal Hinson

5 of 5 THIS IS THE BEST MOVIE I EVER SAW!!!!!! Friday, September 24, 1999
William J. Badurina from Grove City, OH

GHOSTBUSTERS 2 RULES!! I never believed that a movie could be perfect in all aspects, that was until I saw Ghostbusters 2! It was real, real good! I have seen and enjoyed this film so many times, that I lost count! Bill Murray is back and as cool as ever! It has everything!!! Action, comedy, spooks, and horror! I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!! The first time I saw this movie, I laughed from the opening credits to the end credits non-stop! Harold Ramis also makes me giggle alot. I hope Ivan Reitman keeps up the good work! A MAJOR improvement over the first classic Ghostbusters film. The cartoon is also real good. I can hardly wait until Ghostbusters 3!! GO, GO, GHOSTBUSTERS!!!!
