Mamoru Oshii's futuristic animated masterpiece, Ghost In The Shell, is the perfect film to experience on Digital Video Disk. Seamlessly merging traditional cel animation with the latest computer graphic imagery, this stunning sci-fi spectacle has broken the boundaries of mainstream animation with its detailed artistic direction and uniquely intelligent story line. Ghost In The Shell took the world by storm in 1996, introducing a new wave of Japanese animation through its mesmerizing cinematic expression. A movie that questions our own human existence in the fast-paced world of the information age, this remarkable, award-winning, cyber-tech thriller has gone on to become one of the leading Japanese animation films of all time.

Editor's Note

The makers of "Akira" present another milestone Japanimation epic in this futuristic odyssey about an elite half-cyborg female agent sent out to apprehend a cyber-genius data thief who is plundering the very contents of people's minds. Contains nudity and violence. The Collector's Edition includes a special 30-minute documentary on the making of the film.

Plot Summary

Another visually sensational animated film from the producers of the acclaimed "Akira."| Major Motoko Kusanagi is a beautiful cyborg who works for Section 29, Japan's secret police force, in the year 2029. Motoko's supervisor, Aramaki, orders her to find Puppet Master, a sinister computer terrorist created by a rival organization. | Helping her is fellow cyborg Bateau and the almost entirely human agent Togusa. Because their prey has the ability to hack into the minds of his enemies, the evil villain must be stopped as soon as possible.| But as the tough cops close in on their target, Motoko realizes that she and Puppet Master seem to have a lot in common.

5 of 5 Ghost = Gnarly Tuesday, December 26, 2006
A Viewer from East Lansing, MI

Not before Ghost In The Shell had Science Fiction or anime came close to the quality and structure of a critically acclaimed literary piece. As a precurser to the Matrix trilogy, this movie is a great buy for any movie-lover.

5 of 5 hmmm....good movie Tuesday, September 28, 2004
viper2001wolf from Central Texas
I won't spoil it for you...but as long as you are watching the show when they are discussing the characters and how they came to be who they are...then you can completely skip episode 25. As far as episode 26, on my DVD player it starts at 3 hrs, 9 min, and 15 sec (end of the beginning credits that is). You can safely skip to 3hrs, 20min, and 43 sec and still follow the story line 95%. The 25th and beginning of episode 26 DO serve a purpose. 25 goes DEEPLY into the psyche of the characters. This is kind of odd as I have not seen a series devote and ENTIRE episode to probing the inner psyche of its characters. A great deal of it was repetitive for me because I had already figured all of that stuff out, and you should too. But if you missed something then watch it. No plot points are in it though. 26 contains the actual point of the series...and surprise it has nothing to do with the angels...not really any way. To ease your feelings about the end of the series...keep this in mind...the series is not about the life of humans battling these angels but is rather about Shinji and giving him a better outlook of his life. Other than that VERY interesting twist the rest of the series is AWESOME...little sexual jokes throughout are hilarious and to me appropriate. They give the show the feeling of real life. Many times they make a comment that is meant a "certain" way and it was EXACTLY what I would have thought of to fit that situation. Then there are the things where the creativity of it completely blows me away! But this is not a comedic series; the humor in it is real to the situations and VERY few are comic relief. I give it a 9 out of 10 only because I felt the 25th episode (forgive my harshness) was in the end not necessary, though they do serve some purpose. And the VERY end doesn't leave you going, "WHAT THE HELL?" but it does leave you feeling as though you need just a LITTLE more closure...not much, but a little. It's great though, if you love anime you'll adore it, if you like anime then you'll enjoy it. It's finale leaves you feeling like you where in a therapy session to give yourself a better outlook on life. So congratulations on your achievement! ;-P I do like the final thoughts of this show, they give good philosophy really and in the end it's really good. TWO THUMBS UP! And again...CONGRATULATIONS!!!

5 of 5 A true work of Art Sunday, March 05, 2000
noah from Stockton, CA
Despite the comical manga it's based on, Ghost in the Shell is the second most complex anime, second only to Neon Genesis Evangelion. Every scene is beautifully illustrated with life-like motion and fluidness. A must for any true anime fan.

5 of 5 Great anime, but not quite perfect Monday, January 10, 2000
Jake Galgon from Swarthmore, PA
This movie is great, but for some reason I don't quite love it as much as I think i should. I don't know why. The only thing I can think of is that I was tired and bored when I watched it. I recommended it to everyone I knew, and rented it again. I liked it the second time too. The only thing I can think of is that it's a bit depressing and not as action packed as some anime. I still recommend it though. two thumbs up!

If you like Science fiction or Anime, then you must buy and own this title. Don't just watch it. I've seen it 5 times, 3 times in theaters, and it's simply great. It's much better than Akira. Just buy it.

If you are sick of mainstream movies that only require an IQ of 10 to understand, then this is for you. The story is excellent and the art is even better.
