| Most people have gotten to know Fabolous from his astonishing turn on Lil' Mo's current smash hit single and video "Superwoman Pt. II." But this 21-year-old Brooklyn native is no newcomer to the rap game--it was back in 1998 that mixtape king DJ Clue signed him to Desert Storm Records, his new label. The first single, the aptly titled "Can't Deny It," featuring Nate Dogg is already a smash hit, and the rest of the album boasts tracks produced by Clue, Duro, Rockwilder, The Neptunes, Just Blaze, Timbaland and Rick Rock. Producer Rockwilder brings his sonic funk to "Get Right," where Fab plays off of Junior Mafia's "Players Anthem," exhorting listeners to "Grab your d-ck if you're gettin' right." The Neptunes produced "Young'n," a call-and-response club anthem, while "Ma Be Easy," produced by Just Blaze, finds Fab telling chickenheads to keep their hands out his pocket. Fab's mentors, Duro and Clue, helm the scalding "Keepin' It Gangsta." On "Take You Home," Lil' Mo sings the chorus Lisa Lisa made famous 16 years ago with "I Wonder If I Take You Home." With Fabolous kicking off the Elektra/Desert Storm union, Duro is confident the new relationship will quickly make its mark on the hip hop business. "We wanted to make sure they are as excited about the project as we are. We weren't looking for any bandwagon, we wanted to start from scratch. A lot of people was like, 'We're the hottest camp, we're gonna make you hot.' Elektra was like, 'We can do this together, we're really feeling Fabolous.' " "The most entertaining argument for hip-hop excess to come along in a while, due to Fab's ability to add lyrical twists and turns to the genre... You may have heard it all before, but not quite like this." Kris Ex, Rolling Stone
| | Album Notes and Credits | Notes & Personnel Info | | This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. | | From out of nowhere, Fabolous swooped onto the hip-hop scene in summer 2001 with this big-money debut album and a sure-fire hit ("Can't Deny It"). It also didn't hurt that Fabolous' rhymes happen to fit right in the with the zeitgeist of the moment, exhibiting somewhat of an East Coast variation of the bling bling style synonymous with Southern rap. Besides Jay-Z's occasional departure into materialism and/or hedonism ? la "I Just Wanna Love U," the East Coast didn't really have a young, icy player -- at least not since the popular downfall of Bad Boy following the Notorious B.I.G.'s death. So if all this sounds a bit calculated, that's probably because it is. The flagship for DJ Clue's Desert Storm label, Fabolous is targeted at a specific niche, and he's well positioned. You know this before even hearing the music, just by glancing over the credits: big-money, of-the-moment producers like the Neptunes, Rockwilder, and Timbaland drop beats, and big-name, all-over-the-airwaves rappers/vocalists like Ja Rule, Lil' Mo, Jagged Edge, and Nate Dogg contribute some hooks -- these are can't-miss artists capable of propelling an unknown like Fabolous to overnight stardom. And that's exactly how it worked, thanks to the Rick Rock-produced, Nate Dogg-graced "Can't Deny It," a song that conveniently lifts a trademark 2Pac line for its hook ("I can't deny it, I'm a f*ckin' ridah," from "Ambitionz as a Ridah"). As calculated as it may be, it's an irresistible hook; unfortunately, the remainder of the album isn't nearly as alluring. ~ Jason Birchmeier | Musical Guests | | Ja Rule | | Jagged Edge | | Lil' Mo | | Pain In Da Ass |
