Before 1980, Georgia finished in the Top 3 of the final AP poll only twice. They finished the 1942 season as #2 and were #3 in 1946. Coincidentally, those were also the only two years that UGA had a consensus All-America running back in Heisman winner Frank Sinkwich and Heisman runner-up Charlie Trippi, respectively. Almost three and a half decades go by before Herschel Walker comes along and Georgia climbs all the way to the top of the heap.
