In 1984 the tournament favorite North Carolina Tar heels (27-2) were led by Player of the Year, Michael Jordan. The Tar heels were upset in the East Regional Semifinals by unranked Indiana, 72-68. The National Championship game pitted the 2 losing teams in the past 2 NCAA title games against each other. Georgetown, led by tournament MVP Patrick Ewing, squared off against last year's MVP, Akeem Olajuwon and the Houston Cougars. The two most celebrated big men in college basketball were meeting in competition for the first time, but neither was a stranger to the season finale.
