A little pricey, $35-$40 would be a more reasonable price but you get excellent quality in construction and especially the supplied dual link connecting cable. Documentation is the bear minimum , it would be nice if they would include diagrams showing various configurations with monitors, computers, TV's especially on Gefen's web site. After ordering 1 detective I realized I needed an additional detective for my configuration. Had to call tech support 2 times the get the needed info, one tech support associate was not helpful and seemed to know little about the product but the other one was very informative. The good thing is you get an actual Gefen tech support person.

I bought a new Hi-Def TV and was trying to use the DVI-I output on my HTPC (Home Theater PC). Everything worked great until I turned off the TV, or changed the input on the set. The computer would sense that the connection was lost and turn off the DVI output; I would have to re-boot to restore output. When I received this item I simply hooked the output to my tv, connected the power then pressed the button. The DVI detective stored all of the ID information from my set and stored it to an EEPROM. After that I switched the write protect switch and removed the power cord. Now, the PC always thinks the TV is connected, regardless if it is or not. I would highly recommend this item.
